03 Limited transmission weirdness

Hello All;
Early last year I purchased a used 03 Limited Automatic with an extended warranty and 37,000 original miles on it. (yeah, sweet, huh?) It currently has 51,000 and developed a problem with the transmission.
It has happened both times just after starting up and driving for just over 1,000 feet down an incline before stopping at a stop sign. At the stop sign the engine is running fine, but the transmission is not engaged even though the gear shifter is in drive.
The car drove fine out of the parking space and out the apartment complex, but by the bottom of the hill the transmission has stopped being engaged. Press the gas and the engine revs. Move the gear shifter to park and back to drive it may or may not engage. When it DOES engage after this, it is with a bump.
Have needed no mechanical work yet on this car. It has four new tires, and a new rear wheel shim kit installed by a reputable tire outlet. The tire place reset the chip when they did the shim kit, not sure why though. Could this reset have created the transmission problem?

Did you have the tranmission fluid and filter changed at 45K? New fluid and filter will do wonders.

Sounds like what my wife's '01 auto tranny did before it went out. Did you check for codes?
