06 8-Ball Gear shift for Auto

Hello.... I got so much information from these forums so I thought I'd pass along the info on a 8-Ball Gear Shift knob I made today for my 2006 auto shifter. To make the 8 Ball gear shift knob for the 2006 PTC Automatic shift shaft I bought two new Aramith 8 Balls on ebay for $17.08 including shipping. I bought two because I usually screw up the first time. I measured the gear shift shaft at 0.502” diameter, so I had a friend with a lathe drill a 0.5” hole thru the ball. Before drilling the hole, he used duct tape to protect the balls surface from the jaws marks, and also at the point where the drill entered the ball to prevent cracking of the finish. He drilled about half way thru with the ½” bit then the rest of the way with a smaller pilot bit, reversed the ball in the lathe and then continued with the ½” bit. This gave a good clean cut to the hole edges on both sides. The hole size is 0.500” and the shaft is 0.502” so the ball is a “Tight” friction fit and no set screw was needed. For the release button I used a 45 caliber nickel platted case. It has a diameter of 0.474” and a length of 0.891” so it was a nice fit in the hole and the length was fine to allow the ½” depression required to unlock the shifter. I used two different size rubber tubes (one inside the other) to fill the case inside and pushed it down over the release shaft. This also was a friction fit so nothing else was needed. It looks better than the picture shows. George

Wow! Nice Job! I want a different shift knob on my 5 spd but I can't even get the stock knob off to replace it. I have considered a large pipe wrench... ---------- DC1 #1610--5-speed. Its got some stuff. '03 Inferno Red--Its getting some stuff too!

Looks great! Sent1 the stock knob on the 5 speed just pulls straight up to remove, at least on my '01 it did, not sure if anything has changed since then... The shaft has a cut out on one side that a clip snaps into from the inside of the knob... From what I remember it took a little force to release it. ---------- Joel
