18" Tire Help Can't Post

Okay guy's I ordered a set of new chrome wheels 1 month ago & a new set of Kumho Ecsta tires 225/45/18. I got them in the mail today so when I got off work I took them to have them mounted I get a phone call that they "rub against the strut" I was severly disappointed! I asked if there was another size of tire that would fit & they told me that they would totally be like a rubber band. Now, I hav eseen 18" tires on ther PT's at car shows how do you get them to fit so they don't rub the strut? Help!!!! Disappointed before the MWUSAR!Frown

I don't see why you are having a problem with the tire's I have 235/40/18's on my 06 Convertible all the way around. They have been on the convertible for 15,000 miles so far with no rubbing or any other problems. Mine are BFGoodrich touring tires and are 9.5 inches wide.

Sounds like you ordered or received the wrong wheel offset.

Re: [Dream3] 18" Tire Help Can't Post

If they're rubbing against the struts, then I'd agree with Bluephrog. The offset of the wheel is most likely not right - too much positive offset. If you want to stick with the same wheels, you will need some spacers.

I believe the correct profile for those tires would have been 225/40-18. So 225/45-18 tires add 22.5 mm or .89 inches to the overall diameter of the wheel/tire.

((225*.45)-(225*.40)) * 2 = 22.5 mm
22.5/25.4 = .89"

Aside from making the gearing a bit "taller" (not sure if it would be noticeable), and introducing a slight error in the speedometer reading (3.55% in this case), the bigger wheels may also start rubbing against the insides of the wheel well, control arms... especially at full turn.

Should you choose to use spacers and keep the wheel/tires, the good news is silvereagle is already running 235/40-18 tires.

((235*.40)-(225*.40)) * 2 = 8 mm
8/25.4 = .31"

So you know up to .31" over the tires won't rub. You'd only be adding .58" (0.89 - 0.31) on top of that. Hopefully that'll be OK.

Good luck.

Re: [rsobhian] 18" Tire Help Can't Post

Okay Rsobhian, am I understanding this correctly, if I change my tire size then every thing will be okay? The Chrome rims I bought are 18x8 with a +40mm offset, the tires are 22/45/28 so if I reduced it to 225/40/18 then it will fit?

Re: [Dream3] 18" Tire Help Can't Post

OK, I'll try to sum it up in as few words as possible... bear with me...

First, the tire rubbing issue:

225 tires are not too wide and should not rub against the strut. What is causing them to rub against the strut is the 40mm offset on an 8"-wide wheel. I believe the correct offset should be 35mm. As explained below, 40mm offset is pushing too much of the weel into the wheelwell and up against the strut.

The Fix - spacers:

Spacers are metal (alloy, aluminum... I'm not sure) disks that are made with different thicknesses and bolt patterns that you mount between the wheel and the hub. They push the wheel out more, which in effect reduces the offset. So 5mm spacers should do.

I have heard people using them but I personally have had no experience with them. Your local wheel and tire shops should know about, and be able to get them for you.

Here is a sample pic:

IMPORTANT:
If you are going to get spacers, you have to make sure they are "hub-centeric" in design. The lug nuts are supposed to only hold the wheel in place and are not meant to be loadbearing. So the spacers should mount perfectly around the hub (without any play) and provide and provide a second mounting hub to perfectly fit your wheels (again no play).

Offset Explained:

Offset is a measure of where the wheel bolts to the hub in relation to the center of the wheel's width. Imagine a plane resting against the back surface where the wheel would rest against the hub and get bolted to it. Now imagine that plane to be big enough to cut through the wheel. If the plane cuts through the wheel exactly at half the width of the wheel (its center) it's said to have a 0 offset (black vertical line in the picture). Postive offset is how far in front of that center position the plane would cut through the wheel (red vertical line in the picture).

So 40mm calculates to about 1.57 (40/25.4) inches. This means when you mount the wheel to the car, relative to the surface of the hub, 5.57 inches of the wheel would go inside the wheelwell and 2.43 inches will come outward.

That 5.57" seems to be too much. Adding spacers will reduce that.

See the Wikipedia definition of offset for more info.

The bigger wheels concern mentioned in previous post:

Adding spacers will fix the tire rubbing against the strut issue, however, with the increased overall diameter of the tire you may experience other rubbing issues. For example, if the wheel is turned a lot and you hit a bump, the tire might rub against the edges of the wheelwell arch. But then again, you may be OK. You won't know until you try.

In the end:

I think at this point you need to enlist the help of a local tire shop. It's going to be a bit of a trial and error to get it all right and make the wheels and tires fit. The are better equipped for that trial and error process. Wink

Re: [rsobhian] 18" Tire Help Can't Post

Bow Thanks so much for that great detailed explaination! I printed it off & took it Big O tires tonight, he said that the 40mm offset should not affect having a pair of 225/40/18. He looked on some chart & showed me that is the correct size for that size of wheel. I am taking my car in before work, I guess while I am work he is going to "play" but he didn't recommend the use of spacers alot of reasons & the bigggest being about imbalance which can cause multiple problems. Maybe ther is a "tire angel"angel But regaurdless, I am going to the Rally w/ or w/o 18inchers!Band

Re: [Dream3] 18" Tire Help Can't Post

So did the tell you exactly what part of the strut assembly the tire was rubbing against? Was it against the strut itself or under the spring seat?

I just went outside and looked at ours, and now that I actually look at it (sorry I really should have done this before ) there is about a half-inch space between the top of the tire and the bottom of the spring seat. The tires I have on the car are OEM sized 225/50-16.

Now going back to the first post on this thread and the calculation of the 22.5mm increase in the overall diameter, I'm thinking the rubbing is against the bottom of the spring seat. 22.5mm is almost an inch. Half of this increase would be at the top and half at the bottom of the wheel. So the half inch increase at the top could be pushing the tire against the bottom of the spring seat.

If that is the case, sorry again... all along I was thinking the tire was against the side of the strut. If it is rubbing against the bottom of the spring seat a set of 225/40-18 tires should do the trick.

Find out from the tire guy where exactly the rubbing is taking place.

BTW, I do agree with the guy on not using spacers. It's not a great solution, but it would have been the only one had offset been the problem and you wanted to keep the wheels.

Okay , you have 225/45/18 tires on what size of Wheel? The wheel I have is a 18x8 w/ 40+mm offset. Curious What's your offset?
