2001 PT with 2006 engine

I have a 2001 PT 2.4 non turbo and replaced the engine with a 2006 2.4 non turbo and the only differance I found was the crank sensor was in a differant location. I made a longer harness and tried to crank the car. It acts as though it's out of time by backfireing . I took it to Chrysler and they flashed the computer and told me that I could not use this engine. Has anyone been through this? ----------

Two questions: 1) Is the transmission also from a 2006? 2) Is the computer from a 2006? if either of these is "No" then I can see an immediate problem. The 2006+ have the transmission computer and engine computer (sorry, don't remember the correct accronyms) built into one over-all computer. The previous years have a seperate transmission computer. I would imagine that could cause the issues you are having. Also, if the computer you are using is from your 01 turbo, it won't be able to correctly control a NA motor. I believe the turbos have (correct me if I'm wrong guys) a different air/fuel ratio to compensate for the extra air that the turbo shoves into the intake. I'm not a gearhead, but I have always fixed my own cars (till now ) out of necessity. Those are the first things that come to my mind. Good luck with your car! -Ray P.S. If you need Part Numbers or anything for the 06 models: I have one sitting outside and would be glad to take a peek or a picture. ----------

Thanks for answering. The computer and trans is from the 01. Both engines were non turbo. The only differance at all was the crank censor was in a differand location. I know the 01 had a hole in the block and read the crank andd the 06 reads the flywheel. The plug in was the same so I just made a longer harness to go to the rear. This borders on BS as far as I am concerened. When we got to electronic ignition we should have stopped. I had no idea I would get into this big of an ordeal. The 06 only had 7,000 miles and I thought I had found something. ----------

I have seen this come up before and yes it is a big problem, the sensor reference voltages are different (the sensors have changed several times through the years even though the connectors match), and I believe that the crank sensors are on different sides of the engine which would as you thought be out of time, (180 degrees out), here is a link to a thread where another PT owner that did a old/new engine swap with how they over came some of the problems: http://www.ptcrew.com/....php?p=173984#173984 ---------- '05 GT Dream Cruiser Series 4.
