2002 PT with check engine ligh " decoded " ADVICE REQUESTED :-( Can't Post

I own a 2002 pt cruiser 2.4 engine with 93k miles on her,,

she is running fine BUT the check engine light came on,,
I took her to auto zone and they "decoded it " with the following results..

1 - Blocked passage on EGR system
2- Failed EGR Valve
3- EGR Solinoid faulty
4- Failed EGR Pressure wheree applicable
5 - Failed EGR Position sensor ehere applicable

Any advice aplicable,,

location of EGR,, purpose of EGR.. ?
I can actually build motorcycles but havent a clue about egr stuff,,

any step by step would be greatli appreciated...
Thanks Much

Hi
The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust back into the intake manifold. This exhaust mixes with the intake air and actually cools the combustion process. You'll know if your EGR valve is stuck or malfunctioning because your car will experience symptoms like rough idle and bucking on acceleration and cause the CEL to come on.
They run around $90.00 at your local parts store. Attached is a pic.

Good luck

I had the code come up for the EGR as well. Had it diagnosed at AutoZone and they said to replace it. I had to buy it from the dealer because they didn't stock it. If you have to, it's not to bad of a job to replace. It's mounted on the lower side of the engine on the drivers side near the fuse box. The hoses run up to what looks like a diaphram between engine and the fire wall by the throttle body. There's a snap ring that I managed to pop loose with a screwdriver to get that part of it off. Took about 45 mins.
