I heard talk of an all wheel drive Cruiser last year then nothing more about it. Has anyone heard anything. With all the snow and hills around here in the winter, that's what I'm waiting for.

Think the AWD model is still in the "concept stage" but, may eventually be released. With the new "ragtop" being released in 2004 Chrysler may be saving the AWD model--"Chrysler PT Big Sky"--for 2005, who knows?

Found the following info:

Chrysler PT Big Sky
While the PT Super Cruiser is all about performance, the Chrysler PT Big Sky AWD is about a new level of luxury for the award-winning PT Cruiser. Featuring a new twist on open-air technology, the Chrysler PT Big Sky has an innovative five-panel glass lamella roof system, which opens wide enough for both front and rear seat occupants to get a full view of the sky.

Designed by Webasto Roof Systems, Rochester Hills, Mich., the lamella roof system includes five separate panels. The first stationary panel acts as a vent, while the remaining four retractable panels stack vertically at the rear of the window opening. The roof panels and side windows are tinted using Solutia Automotive's (Troy, Mich.) innovative new process that laminates a color interlayer called Vanceva™ between two pieces of tempered glass to create a unique tint to match the body color. This new process provides more UV protection, intrusion resistance, sound deadening qualities and weight reduction compared with tempered glass.

ASC Southfield, Mich., provided the PT Big Sky features a unique ground effects package, that includes custom front and rear fascias, wheel flares and fog lamp treatment. The rear fascia was modified to accept the Borla dual exhaust system, while the modified front fascia features a new open-air appearance, with silver recessed mesh on the lower portion. The profile view highlights the polished stainless steel surround trim that accent the custom Solutia tinted windows, chrome-trimmed side mirrors and chrome trimmed body side moldings. Other features include 18-inch BBS wheels, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires and stainless steel brake rotors and calipers on all four wheels. The custom rear fascia features an integrated bumper and Borla dual exhaust. PPG created the Merlot custom paint color.

The more luxurious interior of the PT Big Sky is done in light pearl beige with leather seating and door trim provided by Seton, Troy, Mich. Johnson Controls Inc. created the custom front seats, which feature a W.E.T. Inc. Comfort Cools ™ system for heating and cooling. The interior also includes a Panasonic custom entertainment system with DVD video and true multi-channel surround sound. As part of the entertainment system, four video screens are integrated into the vehicle, including a seven-inch flip out LCD monitor on the instrument panel, two LCD monitors in the back of the front seats and a 15-inch removable LCD monitor in the cargo area mounted to the sliding cargo system, which was designed and manufactured by Webasto Roof Systems.

The only PT Cruiser with an all-wheel drive system, the PT Big Sky uses technology to offer better traction and complement the luxury features of this show car. While this one-of-a-kind PT Cruiser came from Chrysler Group, ASC Creative Services performed the custom work and integration based on a design created in conjunction with the Chrysler Group.

Why can't they just build the all wheel drive model. Who needs all that other stuff for a winter driver that's just gonna get all salt and dirt?

I wish they built the all wheel drive a long time age. That is the one thing I have been looking for in the pt. Now that the turbo is boosting the power, hope the AWD will be next. Tongue

My Cruiser with four snow tires (real snow tires, not "all season" tires) handles most snow and ice conditions almost as well as my AWD and 4WD vehicles.
AWD adds complexity, weight and cost.

P.S. Just got another 24" of snow this week. This is my Cruiser's 3rd winter. I'm glad Rick's thinking of a PT for a year-round car. Back in 2000 a lot of people were talking about putting their Cruisers away in winter time. I'm enjoying mine 12 months a year, and not worrying about road salt and everything that goes with a New England winter.

All wheel drive with a transverse-mounted engine in an already cramped engine bay is going to be WAY too complicated.

Setting aside traction, etc., considerations, I wonder: If DCX is rediscovering rwd big cars, why not a PTC on said platform? Even if it means lengthening the front end and cutting into interior and storage space, I would LOVE to see a front engine/rear-drive PTC with an inline twin-cam six (son of slant six?).

The PT Cruiser show car that was shown at the 1999 North American International Auto Show had the 2.4-liter engine and all-wheel drive. It can be done.Wink

HatI've got to agree with Inferno on this one. $500 worth of winter tires will take you any where you need to go in the winter. All-wheel-drive will never be that cheap on the Cruiser plus using the proper winter rubber saves all that extra weight that the extra mechanicals would add. The LAST thing the PT Cruiser needs is MORE weight.

I've been to Syracuse and the hills there are no worse than what my Cruiser climbs in the winter with my Dunlop Graspic DS-1 tires (fairly mediocre winter tires, BTW). I live in the mountains of south-central PA (1500-2700' elevation) and we get a real mess here in the winter. I would reccommend you get some Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 tires (195/65-15) mounted on steel rims from the Tire Rack. They are good in every winter condition except ice that has standing water on top (think THAW conditions). Only then are fully studded tires desirable. Think about what kind of winter roads you drive on. If you only go out after the plows have done their work then you may consider one of the newer " performance" winter tires. They aren't as squishy as the deeper-snow tires so they handle better and can still do ice. Call the folks at Tire Rack; they can advise you as to what is best for the roads you drive.

Remember, $500 is what most folks have as their insurance deductible...food for thought.Wave
