AL Meet and Greet - March 18th Can't Post

Wave Please mark your calendar for Saturday, March 18th for our monthly Meet & Greet at Fantail Seafood Restaurant, 2060 Downey Street, Millbrook, AL from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. They have a buffet with seafood, fresh veggies and chocolate pudding for dessert. It's very affordable and all you can eat, so bring your appetite with you! Please keep in mind, with the winter months upon us, this event will be WEATHER PERMITTING (rain...okay / snow, sleet, mix...not okay). Hope to see you there!

Limited menu helps this buffet excel
Not too long ago, I received an email from someone looking for good catfish places. I responded with a couple of recommendations, but I overlooked a very good catfish place ; Fantail Restaurant in Millbrook. The owners, Rita and Jack Findland, have run the place for the past 10 or so years, but it has been open for over 20 years ; quite an accomplishment for a restaurant.
After a long overdue visit, it became clear why people still frequent Fantail ; good food at a good price ; always a good combination.
The format at Fantail is buffet (dinner only), and the menu stays pretty much the same. There are three separate buffet bars. The salad bar includes tossed salad, seafood salad, West Indies salad, boiled shrimp and cole slaw. There also is a condiment bar (ketchup, ****tail sauce, tartar sauce and fresh lemon) so you can choose the right sauce for whatever you choose to eat. At the end of the condiment bar is a big pot of seafood gumbo.
There are several different main dishes from which to choose. As for the seafood, there's fish, shrimp, oysters and crabmeat. You also have plenty of choices of how your seafood is cooked: baked, broiled or fried. In addition to the seafood, Fantail offers chicken fingers, red beans and rice, shrimp creole and barbecue. The side dishes included green beans, corn on the cob, hush puppies, French fries, fried okra and fried dill pickles.
My dining companions and I tried just about everything. Our favorites include the fried catfish, shrimp and hushpuppies. The catfish has a light cornmeal crust and is crunchy on the outside and moist and tasty on the inside. It was very good. So were the hushpuppies. We ate our share of those little crispy things. The fried shrimp also were good. The were cooked with the same cornmeal crust as the catfish.
Another bright spot was the barbecue. It appeared to be pulled and was still in large chunks and not smothered in sauce. The barbecue sauce (mild and hot) was offered on the side. Two in our group liked the West Indies salad, and one of us liked the fried crabmeat. They use only imitation crabmeat at Fantail, so I didn't care for it much. It's pretty good in a salad, but fried or in gumbo is not very good to me. And speaking of the gumbo, it was thin with big chunks of tomato. Not very good.

The other disappointments were the fried okra and fried dill pickles. I had heard a lot about the fried dill pickles, but unfortunately, both items were barely warm.
One big hit for everyone was the chocolate pudding and vanilla wafers for dessert. It was smooth and creamy and was not instant. Everyone ate a big bowl with cookies. Who says a dessert has to be fancy to be good? Not me.
So let's sum up. Of all the entrees we tried, the best things were the fried catfish, fried shrimp and the barbecue. Of the sides, we liked the hushpuppies, fries, corn on the cob and would have enjoyed the okra and dill pickles had they been hot.
Fantail excels where other buffets fail by limiting their menu ; the more items, the less quality, in my opinion. I hope Fantail enjoys another 20 years of good service.

Re: [Mylilcruz] AL Meet and Greet - March 18th Can't Post

Good morning, everyone! For those of you that didn’t know, Sue and I had to cut our evening short and make a mad dash from the Meet and Greet last night due to a medical emergency with Sue. She was released from UAB at 2:30 this morning and is heading to the Eye Foundation today. The ophthalmologist feels it was blood behind her eye and she is hoping to find out more today. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers!

Thank you all for a great Meet and Greet! You could definitely tell cabin fever had set in, because we had a tremendous turnout. We were expecting around 15 people, and we almost doubled that amount. Thanks to Donna and Winston for arranging everything! The food and the company were outstanding. We had lots of new faces and are excited that this year will be a banner year for the club. We were even graced with the presence of our Former King, Doug, and his beautiful family!

Stay tuned for upcoming events and we hope to see you all soon! Check our website often for updates. Again, thanks for a great Meet and Greet and we look forward to fun days ahead with our Cruisers!
