Air Conditioning "Thump"

OK, here's a strange one. I recently changed the timing belt on my PT and as a result had to discharge my A/C. After I was finished, I pulled the required vacuum on the system and recharged it. The A/C works great, and I use it almost every day down here in Florida even at this time of year. When I leave for work in the morning, I can turn the A/C on and there is no problem. But, in the late afternoon when I get back in my car to go home, when I turn the A/C on, about 1/2 the time there is a distinct "thump" I hear along the passenger side firewall. I can't tell if it is inside or outside. It only happens the first time I turn the A/C on, only in the afternoon after sitting at work, and I can't duplicate it the rest of the trip. It also occurs if I turn it to defrost, which also turns on the compressor. Even on the trip home, after the noise, the A/C is nice and cold. The noise sounds like an air director flap gets stuck when it needs to shift and suddenly breaks free and slams into the open position. But I looked in the manual and can't see any type of flap that would move when the compressor turns on. Any ideas? Thanks! Doug ----------

Quote: Hi Doug, Could it be the Recirculation damper opening or closing? wd4o I don't think so. I notice no change in the air flow before or after the thump. Unless, it is stuck halfway in a position and then moves fully to vent. Then there may not be a noticeable change. Thanks for the thought. Doug
