Alabama:Birmingham Botanical Gardens April 14, 2007

Put the cargo mats in your Cruisers, because Saturday, April 14, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is having their plant sale. We will meet at the gardens (located across the street from the zoo) at 2:00. The great thing about buying plants here is 1) the money benefits the gardens, which charges no admission and 2) because the plants were grown locally, they're sure to thrive in your yard. They also have a fantastic gift shop. The azaleas and dogwoods will be in bloom. Bring your camera—it's a lovely time to visit the gardens. IMPORTANT UPDATE I called the Botanical Gardens today, and the plant sale will not be at the garden itself; it will be held at the former Vincent's Market just outside Brookwood Mall. (on the Parisian's side) Let's meet at the Applebee's for lunch, which is right by the plant sale, at 1:00 for lunch. You can shop before or after we eat.

Hi Hipcat, Who is that a statue of and speaking of hineys - it looks like he's missing his pants. Hmm...Maybe it's the smaller screen on my laptop. 4 months. Later, Slipfit ---------- If it's gonna happen - it's gonna happen out there.

LOL! I'm glad you noticed. That is Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge. (Birmingham was founded on the steel industry, and Red Mountain was a major source of iron ore.) He sits atop Red Mountain, overlooking Birmingham. He is, indeed, missing his underpants. Homewood (where I live) is on the other side of the mountain. So we affectionately refer to him as The Moon Over Homewood. I will take y'all up there at some point during the weekend. You can ride an elevator up to the top and really see the ciy. ----------

Even better: A few years ago, they took him down for restoration. When they put him back up, they turned him at a 23º angle. He used to face directly over Birmingham, but now, as you can see from the photo, he is tilted at a slight angle. The reason? So his hiney wouldn't be so directly over Homewood. I also miss his popsicle. Now he holds a spear, as he did originally 100 or so years ago. In most of my lifetime, however, he had a great big popsicle. You can see the statue from all over Birmingham. When the popsicle was green, it meant all was safe. When the popsicle was red, it meant that there had been a traffic fatality, and it was a reminder to slow down. ----------

Stormy weather kept our numbers down, but we had a great lunch at Applebee's, and I came home with a shopping-cart's-worth of hostas for the rock garden! Our next event is the May 12 car show. Please try to make that one; our club was invited specifically. ----------
