i like it! the front end has a lot of the styling cues form the current wrangler. seems like a nice SUV. standard engine is the 2.4 that we have in our cruisers. optional is a 3.7 V6 with 215hp. i have also heard 2 different stories about the current cherokee. one says that it will be produced for at least another year alongside the liberty, another story said that it will be killed after the 2001 M.Y. killing the cherokee would be a huge mistake. since the tooling costs have long since been amortized, they should cut the price back to about 17k on the cherokee and have a great entry level SUV. price the liberty at 21k and keep the current 26k grand cherokee. but they won't, cos it makes too much sense. i will miss the cherokee. i will miss the bulletproof 4.0 6 cylinder and equally durable AW4 transmission. my next vehicle purchase will be a used cherokee!

Sax, rumour is that they are releasing the Liberty as a replacement for the Cherokee which will lead to the demise of the Cherokee completely after this model year. As they said, why have two vehicles from the same manufacturer competing against each other. The Grand Cherokee will continue.

As for the Liberty, I think it's going to be one of those cars that grow on you - after a while you get used to it...

wendy;
yep, i read in car and driver that the cherokee would continue on for another year. then i read on the net it would be killed. since car and driver info is usually about 6 weeks old when its published, it looks like my beloved cherokee will be dumped. i blame the germans. btw, if that piece of crap ML Suv they build was the same price as the cherokee..i would buy the cherokee.

  Yes,no rumors about it,it is replacing the Cherokee Sport edition jeep. The Jeep Liberty draws its design from two previous concept jeeps.
One the Jeep Dakar and the other the Jeep Jeepster-which only resembles the Liberty in the head light area and grille.
The Liberty is entirely new. It has a 255 Horse Power V6 and like the PT,it's cam shaft is counter balanced for smoothe running. It has a 5000 pound towing capacity. Ford notes on thier own site that this is a true SUV unlike the Escape,Aztek and other similar designs....and has them worried as well for the Jeeps construction quality. This vehicle was under initial developement before Daimler took control.
It is the Chrysler Crossfire which concerns me. This is a vehicle started and backed entirely uder the Daimler time period...it is designed as a low production sports coupe to combat the Audi TT and other similar cars. With same type of HIGH price tag associated with low production niche vehicles.
JUST WHAT CHRYSLER NEEDS....a heavily influenced by German design unaffordale car. Gee and we wonder why we worry about Daimlers control.

The only thing I really like about it is the rear window...looks remarkably like a 63 Split Window Corvette.
