Avoiding water spots on glass.

Okay.....this post will expose just how bad my "compulsive disorder" condition really is. Water spots......I hate em! I'm talking about the mineral deposit spots that eventually develope on most automobile windows. Every new car I've ever purchased eventually got them. A technician at a glass shop told me that the glass is actually "etched" by the minerals in the water we wash our cars with and maybe even raindrops that contain atmosperic pollutants. He said that once the spots are there, there is little you can do about them. So......does that mean I have to carry a squeegee everywhere I go and jump out after every shower to maintain my glass. Lake Charles is the tenth wettest city in the nation.......there's got to be a better way. That last trip to the glass shop was several years ago......so I went back with the same question. This time the technician (a different one) sold me a can of glass cleaner they use. It's called Sika Glass & Surface Cleaner. He said if I use this every time I clean the glass, I should not have spots before my eyes. So far.......now spots a year later. Have any of you "cruising buddies" found anything that works well........and do you know where I can find a good doctor to treat my condition? ---------- CajunCruiser "Tacky.....yet delightfully unrefined!"

To help keep the water spots off my paint and windshield between washings I use distilled water in the windshield washer reservoir. Since there are no minerals in the water it doesn't leave any spots when I have to use the washers. Using distilled water also keeps the spray nozzles from clogging up. ---------- Monty in Tampa Some of the coolest toys I've owned.... 2003 PT Cruiser GT 1991 Nissan Sentra SER 1971 Ford Torino 500 1967 Pontiac Lemans

The Spotless rinse at the car wash works well as does the MR Clean washing sytem as long as YOU KEEP THE FILTER CHANGED on it. It actually does dry with no spots as they say in the commercial..Drawback.Filters are kinda pricey and last 3/4 washes depending on your local water. But it beats rubbing out water spots on Chrome/glass etc.

Hi, I agree with AUCRZR. I have been using the MR. Clean carwash for about 2-3 years now and it actually works. I started off with the original system and then upgraded to the PRO series. There are no water spots left behind as long as the filter is clean as mentioned before. For the glass specifically, I use Stoner Invisible Glass and sometimes the water spots go away. I have also tried a mixture of vinegar and water on the windshield and that sometimes works too. ----------

I forgot to mention in my previous post that water spots are very, very bad. I heard that water spots act like a magnifying glass, which in turn magnifies the sun and microscopically pits the paint and windows. -Exactly like using a magnifying glass to burn stuff is how water spots work with the sun on paint and windows.- ----------

I suggest the use Rain-X or another glass surface treatment product to decrease formation of water spots. ---------- Drive Safe & Enjoy the Ride. J. W. Gilbert, MSgt USAF (Retired) 2005 Bright Silver Touring Editon 15" Stock wheels, Lots of chrome...

Silver Ghost, I use that as well and have no problem with water spots. I will try the distilled water though, makes sense. Also this Mr Clean, this is what you use in the winter, is that correct? thanks, Mickey ---------- 2005 ELECTRIC BLUE CLASSIC Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. Hi Mickey, The Mr. Clean Autodry Car Wash is a complete car wash system. It comes with dry polymer soap, pur filter, and the nozzle. It works almost like an automatic car wash, all you need is a hose and a rag. The shine left behind is incredible and as the package says, there is no need to hand dry. There are no water spots or streaks. Oh yes, this is a product that you can use 365 days a year. I use it often, especially in the winter and monsoon season. ----------

Thanks Leo, I will get one and have to think of where I can find a hose in the winter. Our apartment complex will not allow washing of cars. My moms and brothers all stored away for winter. Can you use a car wash for the water and use this Auto Dry there? Remember it gets 15 below zero here. Pipes break here so no outside hoses for sure. I do not know if a car wash will let you hook up a hose at their facility. However, you do need to use the system as a whole. (Nozzle, soap, & filter) The whole unit is self contained, soap goes into a resivoir and the filter goes in a little compartment and the PRO series comes with a quick connect hose adapter. 15 below zero must be very cold, but I think I may pass that mark this winter over here. It has been raining almost every day and that usually means a bad/wet winter. Last year it got about 10 below a couple times and the wind chill got to 15 below once I think.
