Buying car for wife Can't Post

My lovely wife wishes a PT Cruiser. I have been looking about and am a little confused by the various sub models. Gt, turbo, limited, touring etc.
What I would like is a PT, fully loaded, with moon/sun roof. heated seats (if leather) etc. what is the suggestion for a used model? I am looking to spend 10-12K. I am not sure if turbo would be of any practical value to her. I will be maintaining her car, as I do our other vehicles..
Thank you in advance for your most learned responses.

Coolthe type of PT you are describing is the limited Edition Model. You can get many lightly used PT in that price range. You need to look at the pre 2005 and 2006 models to see if you like the pre or post 2006 redesign where the inside got squared out,the passenger seat compartment got a "Towel Bar",and the front end lost 1/2 of the grill. It is a matter of personal taste as to what makes you happy. The turbo lite model has a 180 horsepower engine and the GT model has the High Output 260 horsepower engine. There is a great and abundant used market and with time,a little research, and patience you can find exactly what you are looking for in the price range you want.........Merry Christmas and God Bless..........Mike

Re: [wa9zug] Buying car for wife Can't Post

As always, Mike has provided some good info, however, I don't believe the 260 hp figure is correct for a stock GT. The pre 2006 are listed at 220 and the 2006 and up are listed at 230 hp, and they both are supposed to put out 245 pounds of torque. There is a stage 1 upgrade for the turbo that brings the output up to the 260-285 range, but based on what you had stated you probably would not be interested in that.

Also there are some nice options that only the earlier ('01-'02) versions offered that were later discontinued. Among the most useful, are the heated external mirrors and the leather seats with the suede inserts. The suede inserts are thoughtfully placed where your skin would be touching the seat if you're wearing shorts or skirts for the ladies, and help with the discomfort of sitting in a hot/cold seat (my wife really appreciates this bit of engineering).

Good luck.

Wave

PS: if you live anywhere that you have to deal with snow, I'd look for one with traction control. The traction control works beautifully. I've been very impressed with our '01 Limited in snow. Smile

Re: [rsobhian] Buying car for wife Can't Post

CoolSorry about that inaccuracy in my saying the GT had 260 Horsepower Engine. As you stated I was thinking about the Stage 1 Mod improvement horsepower numbers. We are the lucky ones with the 01 Limited Edition PT's.You cannot get the heated folding mirrors now at any price and our coveted leather and suede seating surfaces are still available at a heafty 1200 upcharge. The 4 wheel disc brakes, traction control, and ABS combination is only available on the PCH Edition, and the dual tone horn can be had for a 50 dollar upcharge. The poor resale value of our PT's really is a windfall for people who aren't intimidated by the term"used",and you can get some serious bang for the buck.Wa9zug if you are interested there is a killer 02 Limited Edition PT available at a dealership in New Jersey that has a full landau roof, modified grille work, continental kit with 55k miles for 9600 dollars. The roofwork alone wass a 6000 modification when done initially.PM me and I will give you the contact information. That is SERIOUS bang for the buck...........Mike

Execellent and concise info guys. We live in Milwaukee, soo heated mirrors would be useful. The last thing on my list of desires is HP. If my wife gets a ticket it is more money to the lawyer.
Mike that car sounds OK, but, Think with the abundent used car market I can buy local, and I would like something with less miles. Sounds like you guys are kinda hot on the 01 model?

I have been trolling the Bay. Mostly dealers, and distance is a factor. There seems to be plenty of cars local. it is just a matter to find the right one. That is why I am asking you learned individuals as to your preferences in model and year. I can then decide more concisely what to look for.

If we knew what part of the country you live in we could check locally then when we see something of interest we could let you know. I have two pT^'s one's an 01 Touring edition and one is an 06 Convertible. They came with 16 inch tires but with the gas mileage being so bad in a PT I got 17's for the 01 and 18's for the convertible. The 18's brought my mileage up to 19 local and 26 hiway. The 01 get's the same in the city but more on the hiway closer to 30mph and I pull a small fiberglas trailer with it. Both burn regular gas non turbo. Remember there four banger's not race cars.Get one with the power seat if you can. it makes a big difference. I don't buy many cars used but when I do I look for something under 50,000 miles. Check this out 2002 PT Silver, Automatic ,Sun roof, Leather, four wheel Disc brakes many extra's 47,800 miles call 856-629-6114 It's on the LWOC forum under PT's for Sale. This is a great cruiser that I forgot was for sale. The owner Passed away a few months ago. It's in new Jersey. Call after 6 pm

Re: [silvereagle] Buying car for wife Can't Post

Greetings,

I would like to put in my 2 pennies here. If an 01 is unreachable, try an 02. The 2002 models still had plenty of options on them. I have an 02 and I like it very much.

To put it straight. If you want more options, go with 2005 or older. Remember, the newer the PT the less options. So if you want less options, but a cheaper car, get the redesigned 2006 and newer.

A great example of the vanishing options is seen with the Dream and Street Cruiser series.
The Dream Cruiser series (2002-2005) are fully loaded with every option and carry a hefty tag.
The Street Cruiser series (2006-up) are more value based and compare to the PT Touring and PT Base.

Gas mileage has never been a strong spot on the PT. I have personally seen mileage from 17-25 city and 24-34 highway. I have put in a K&N filter, changed the plugs and wires, and put in a tornado air intake (and yes it works).

Good Luck on your search.

Cool Hi The reason why the mileage is not the greatest is that the PT has a total vehicle weight of over 3000 lbs and isn't that aerodynamic when compared to rice rockets and such. You can switch to a cold air intake, switch the oil to full synthetic 5w-30,get rid of the crappy oem wires and plugs and you will see your mileage greatly improved.I run 23-25 mpg in the city and 28-30 mpg highway after I made those changes.Hope you find a PT to your liking and we want to see the pics when you do.All the best and God Bless......Mike

Hey Mike,

It's been around quite awhile.
Any testing that has ever been done always comes up the same...as in in no workie!
The last test I saw done here the best they came up with doing several different things
(at different times) on three different vehicles was to monitor and keep tires inflated properly.
This article here http://autorepair.about.com/...s/fr/aafpr052002.htm that I
found sums it up best...."the driver perceives an improvement."
I still remember working in auto parts stores back in the 70's and 80's the big thing was cattle magnets
on the fuel line to scramble the gas atoms for better mileage.
Now, about deer whistles.........Wink

Re: [Cruiser RN] Buying car for wife Can't Post

The Tornado air intake is that metal swirler that goes into the intake tube after the air filter (you people call it snake oil).

From what I have experienced with the tornado is a 1 mpg improvement and no I do not percieve it, my records and calculations show that it helps. Maybe it all depends on where a person puts the thing (wrong spot probably). My K&N also made a 2-4 mpg inprovement. I went from 18-20 city to 19-24 city and my record high (with old plugs and wires) was 34 mpg highway.

Oh well to each their own. Maybe one day I can get enough money to buy a cold air intake. I have a poor man's cold air intake.

Did not mean to hijack this thread, take care.

Re: [LeoCruiser] Buying car for wife Can't Post

Here is my take on the matter from a woman's point of view. Smile
I LOVE MY PT!
I have a 2003 GT as it gets amazing gas milage compared to what you guys are saying. My hubby loves to check it when we fill up and it very seldom gets under 24 and on the freeway it is not unusual to get 28 to 30. I have had it a year and a half and haven't done anything to it except normal maintenaince. I do buy the high octane gas which makes the cost go up but the gas mileage is great!Wink
I am 53 years old and this is the first car that I have ever driven that does what that commercial says.... let me see how does it go... The lady turns the key and turns her car on... and the voice asks..."Does it do the same for you?" ROFLROFL

Anyway... your wife is lucky to have a hubby like you!!!
