Chrome Wheels - corroded & leaking... Can't Post

Hi all, NY owner of a Black 01 PT LE with 55k miles....

Bought my PT in '06, since then I've dealt with the not-so-slow air leaks due to the flaking, corroding chrome plated wheels that came with the car. Not understanding the depth of the problem, I just bought new tires, but am still dealing with the leaks. I have to get air at least once a week. It's horrible AND scary reading about the possibility of catastrophic tire failure - especially now that I have a baby that I'm toting around....

Anyway, I realize that the only way to cure this is to get new rims (reluctantly because I just had a baby and $ is tight). I've done some cheap minor mods since I bought the car - it's black so I've added a few pieces of chrome trim, small flames and a chrome flame antenna. I would like to continue with the chrome details and the rims add to that look. I do not, however, want to get another set of chrome wheels to only have to replace them again due to them degrading. I live in NYC (salted roads in the winter) and am not really interested in having to switch out my tires summer/winter.

Can anyone give any advice on what look/type of wheel I should go for...?

Re: [Jaidnoire] Chrome Wheels - corroded & leaking... Can't Post

Wave Greetings,

I have heard plenty of problems about those chrome wheels peeling and leaking; in fact, I think there is a TSB on that.
You cannot go wrong with adding chrome, but it gets expensive after a while.

The type of wheel is completely the owners choice. I wanted something different so I got 15" PT Cruiser 16 spoke polished aluminum rims with the logo cap. The price was reasonable. They seem to be pretty good; I check them regularly and they only go down 1-2 pounds every 3 months or so, but I think it is because the weather changes suddenly here. I also leave the rims/tires on all year with snow and road salt; all I do is wax them once a year since they have a clear coat.

Good Luck

Yeah, the road salt issue (and the desire to avoid changing tires and rims seasonally) are the reasons why I'm sticking with the stock aluminum rims despite my love of chrome. I'll have to content myself with adding chrome elsewhere.

Is that your car in the photo? Judging by the "suburban" setting, you must be in Queens or S.I. Cool

Thanks all for your input! :)

LeoCruiser - Nice Cruiser! You are right about the chrome, it seems like it can get spendy...but I think I'm done with what I have and just recently bought:
Antenna
Mini Flames
License Plate Frame
Head / Tail light trim
Bumper & Hatch trim

I think thats about $150 and that's REALLY good for me, a recovering cellphone modder..Jump 2 I had dreams about modding my PT something crazy, but having a baby sucks $$ like a black hole...lol.

$$ is tight, but, I'm thinking that it might be best for me to spend the it on new rims and not have to worry about this anymore. Atleast I don't have to worry about buying a while package. I'm looking at some painted rims with maybe a chrome lip or inserts or something. Something chrome decorative and less likely to mess with the function of the rim. As a first time mom, as much as I love my PT, I have no time to fuss with this anymore. I'm putting air in my tires atleast 1x a week, it's awful! I spent many days last summer hugely pregnant and in the local tire shop replacing tires, then valves (3 times + 1 time near my job when I came out after work to a total flat tire). Why did no one suggest the sanding process I new keep hearing about when I was there <_<

Any way - Thanks again! Hopefully when I get the new rims I can come back and post a pic!

Dave from NY - Yup, that's me in Queens! And where in NY are you?

Please let us know what you end up doing. I have an LE, too and I'm not exactly in love with the dull look of the stock painted aluminum wheels.

I'm originally from Queens, myself (Ridgewood) but now I live a couple hours north.

Re: [Dave From NY] Chrome Wheels - corroded & leaking... Can't Post

When I brought my 01 LE back in November, it needed new tires. When I went to my tire dealer, Discount Tires, they pointed out that my chrome rims were really corroded and would begin leaking at any time. Not being one wanting to find my brand new tires flat or always low on air, I opted to buy new rims. Unlike a lot of you, I really didn't like the flashy chrome rims that came with the vehicle. I opted for a set of Voxx rims with polished aluminum outer ring and center with the spokes being black. With my dark green paint, they really look nice. I even had a salesman at one of the local Chrysler dealerships comment on how nice they looked. I stayed with the 16" wheel size.

A cheap way to get around this is buy steel wheels from a junk yard or get Tubes put in each tire.
