Chrysler PT Coupe - Concept PT Cruiser Club Always up to date PT Cruiser new model information Introduced: Nov 04, 2003 at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) annual trade show in Las Vegas, NV.
Enthusiasm for Chrysler PT Cruiser customization is taken to a new level with the Chrysler PT Coupe Concept. In partnership with Decoma International, Inc., the Chrysler Group SkunkWerks team began with the new (available early 2004) Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible, and added a permanent hard top and functional drop tail gate to turn it into the PT Coupe Concept. Its aggressive stance begins with a lowered suspension, courtesy of a Mopar coilover suspension kit. Colorado Custom has provided 19 x 8-inch custom-cut aluminum wheels, which wear low-profile P235/35R19 tires from Bridgestone. The PT Coupe Concept’s interior features aggressively bolstered 2+2 seating, with a dramatic focus on the ****pit. Most of the interior – including the entire back seat area – is trimmed in navy blue leather, while the ****pit features a combination of light pearl beige and navy blue leather. The rear view mirror incorporates a pop-out screen for backup assist (the camera is in the rear spoiler). The 900-watt premium audio system incorporates 18 Infinity speakers. Under the hood is a 235 horsepower 2.4-liter high-output turbocharged engine, enhanced with the Mopar Stage 1 turbo upgrade. Additional performance enhancements include a Borla dual tip exhaust, and two-piston caliper performance brakes from StopTech High Performance Brake Systems. Not since the days of the muscle car have performance-oriented products been given such an influential role at the Chrysler Group. Consumers experience it through performance parts from Mopar®, the winning Dodge Motorsports cars and trucks on America’s race tracks, and the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) niche vehicles developed by the company’s Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO). But where does PVO get its ideas? Among the answers is the company’s SkunkWerks team – an unofficial group that was brought together as part of Chrysler Group’s growing emphasis on performance parts, accessories and customization. “We work closely with the Chrysler Group SkunkWerks team in looking at future directions for performance vehicles and parts,” said Dan Knott, Director, Performance Vehicle Operations, whose responsibilities include overseeing the engineering of current and future Mopar Performance Parts. “Like PVO, the SkunkWerks team is composed of a group of dedicated enthusiasts that enjoy working on a wide range of special vehicle projects. They clearly have a grasp of what’s hot in the aftermarket industry. They are really able to stretch their imagination, and that helps us significantly as we develop the next renditions of SRT vehicles and Mopar Performance Parts. “It’s important to note that several of the SkunkWerks team members are PVO engineers,” Knott added. “They walk the talk as PVO engineers during the day, and after hours they are enthusiasts working on SkunkWerks projects or their own vehicles. It all makes for lively idea generation between PVO and the SkunkWerks team.” Venues such as the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show enable the Chrysler Group to demonstrate its commitment to aspirational vehicles – and specifically to vehicle customization and personalization. In the past several years, the company’s Vehicle Excitement Team (VXT) has partnered with SEMA members to help them create more than a hundred new custom Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles. Formed last year, the SkunkWerks team, however, develops its own customized vehicles “straight from the factory.” “First and foremost, the one-off custom vehicles the SkunkWerks team creates are test beds – dream applications, really – for future vehicle designs and Mopar Performance Parts, that we use to gauge consumer interest,” said Ralph Gilles, Director, Interior/Exterior Product Design and Specialty Vehicles – and leader of the SkunkWerks team. “We are really able to push the envelope with these vehicles, by exploring a wide variety of new ideas that come from our engineering and design teams and from our supplier partners.” In addition to more than 25 Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles created by aftermarket companies – in tandem with Chrysler Group’s VXT – for this year’s SEMA show, the following are highlights of seven SkunkWerks-designed show cars for SEMA 2003. In a word...............UGLY!!!! For the life of me, I can't understand DC's thought processes-----------Why waste time and money on this POS, when there is a great market for the Panel Cruiser? The Panel would outsell that ugly PT Convertible 2 to 1, or more. It's about time DC starting building what people will buy, not what "focus groups" say they will buy. Remember, "focus groups" gave GM the Aztek!!! ----------

Retro in the front-neuvo in the back- What were they thinking? Make it an all retro coupe and you'll have some takers. It should look like it has a rumble seat, not a wing in the back. ----------

What was Chrysler thinking? They were thinking look at all the young people with money who like the Fast and the Furious movies. And there you have it. To quote Sam Kinison: I'm in h***! BTW This is my 1st time ever, ever, ever to bad mouth a Cruiser. ---------- UB

I don't hate the Aztek, but I don't like it either. Both my wife and I like this PT Coupe. The GT turbo engine with Stage 1. My GT has the Stage 1 upgrade and it hauls a$$. The sound system sounds awesome. With the Mopar coil over suspension kit and 19x8 wheels with low profile tires it will corner and handle well and with the performance brakes it will stop on a dime. The styling is mostly PT with the roof line and rear end more up to date. I don't see whats wrong with that. I am so sick and tired with all of the clones out there from imports to American cars. Isn't that why we fell in love with the PT because it's different? The funny thing here is these comments are the same kind that the younger crowd made about our PT's. Gee, I wonder where they got that from? The funnier thing is this coupe wasn't designed for most of the people who bought the PT. It's designed for the younger crowd. A retro car with a modern twist that will go fast, corner hard, stop on a dime and has a sound system that will make the older folks at a stop light roll up their windows. OH yeah, I'm 52 and my wife is almost 50. Thank goodness, even though we're getting older we can still think young. In fact, my GT is modified to go fast, corner hard, stop on a dime and you would surely roll up your windows sitting next to me at a stop light. It's designed for the younger crowd..... BUT this is a PT Board ..Which primarly is a welllll not younger crowd.... So the PT Concept may get RAVE reviews with the younger crowd do not expect much from the PT Crowd.. I do agree with it may sell well with the younger crowd ..BUT If its Chryslers intention (which I doubt) to wow PT owners to drop their current PT for this.... I think it will FLOP...... The RETRO (we had or remember cars that looked like the PT) LOOK is why the PT appeals mainly to the older crowd and the just plain COOL younger crowd... FYI ... I WOULD BE ALL OVER THIS ---------- AUCRZR on Horsepower TV Show http://webpages.charter.net/tigertown/hptv.3g2

WOW dont quite understand this one at all........looks like the rear end is going faster than the front end. Seems like this was designed by comittee which never met to compare notes LOL. Bad case of foreign rear end design mated with retro front end and god awful ugly tuner road racer spoiler on the trunk......Oh well we shall see.......Have a great day! ----------

I've got to agree with UncleBill and AUCrzr. It looks like a Honda Civic that got a bad nose job. And I can't see the full screen right now, but I also agree with the comment that the folks who designed the front and the back didn't get together to compare notes! ----------

Replace PT with 300M in almost all these posts and we had the exact same discussion on the 300 board about the supposed new model. I think the "D" in D/C is just trying to kill off the "C". They come out with designs like this and then tell stockholders "Nobody was buying Dodges or Chryslers, so we're getting rid of that group." Then re-label the successful Dodge pickups as Jeeps and be done with it. ----------

I got to see the PT Coupe in person at the Block Party. While it looks a lot better in person, I was not impressed. For me, DC is going in the wrong direction. They already have some Panel Cruiser prototypes. I'd love to see one of those produced. Perhaps the comments about the younger crowd liking the Coupe might be right. That could be DCs goal. DC has a lot more competition in that class and I don't think it will boost sales enough with the younger crowd to pay for all the new tooling that would be needed. It will be interesting to see what DC has come up with for the second generation PT Cruiser in 2006. If the coupe is the direction they are going, I'll keep the two that we have now. ---------- Enjoy the Cruise Don a.k.a. Basset Hound Pics at: http://members4.clubphoto.com/don284358/
