Chrysler to offer new, cheaper PT Cruiser turbo model aimed at young buyers
By MARY CONNELLY |
Automotive News

DETROIT -- In August, the Chrysler group will try to boost sales of the PT Cruiser by offering a cheaper turbocharged model.

The current Chrysler PT Turbo is too pricey for young buyers seeking a powerful engine, says Gary Dilts, Chrysler group senior vice president of sales.

"The base turbo model starts this summer. It will come in at a more traditional base price," Dilts says. The price of the less expensive PT Turbo has not been announced.

The company declined to say if it will keep the more expensive current turbo model along with the new cheaper version in the 2004 model year.

The 2003 PT Turbo sputtered in the market because of its premium price, Dilts says.

"The big criticism of the PT Cruiser, especially from the youth market, was that it is not powerful enough," he says. "The turbo delivers significant power to the vehicle, but it also comes with an equipment package which raised the price $2,500."

The base sticker price of the PT Turbo is $23,280, including destination charges.

Through April, PT Cruiser sales were down 17.0 percent to 40,740 units, compared with a year ago.

The 2003 Chrysler PT Turbo generates 215 hp, compared with the 150 hp of the base vehicle. The turbo and base model have a 2.4-liter, dual-overhead-cam, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine.

When it hit the market, Chrysler marketers said the turbo model was aimed at "performance-minded buyers." The company packaged the more powerful engine with a performance-tuned exhaust system, four wheel disc brakes, antilock brakes, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels and 17-inch tires. The turbo models sport body-colored front and rear fascias and what the company calls "performance front seats."

The company declined to say what equipment the less expensive PT Turbo will have.

Volkswagen also has turned to turbocharging to bolster interest in its New Beetle. For example, VW added a turbo engine to the model in the spring of 1999, one year after introduction.

The PT Turbo may be "too little too late," says Michael Robinet, vice president of global forecast services at CSM Worldwide in Farmington Hills, Mich.

"People who really wanted a PT Cruiser already have one," Robinet says. "Now, PT Cruiser has to compete more in the mainstream."

Just got our limited turbo on Marcdh 31.

As most of you know the best time to deal on cars is end of month and better yet, end of quarter.

I got my inferno red PT Limited turbo for 19K (list was 24,500).

If Chrsyler is gong the "dart swinger" route with the PT (showing my age) that may appeal to the young performance market segment not concerened with much luxury. The dart swingers in '69 were the bare bones versions of the Dart GTS (which I had). I went for the extra $ 400 (back then) and got the nice one.

It may work but IMHO it depends on what actual features they leave out to drop the price low enough.

Wow, realizing this was a 2003 post, so what was the "cheaper" turbo supposed to be? The turbo lite? Wasn't that much cheaper at all as you could still add a bunch of xtras and wind up payin over 20k...really odd.

I guess that's why I was able to get my limited turbo fully loaded for only 19K? (Although it was the end of the quarter and I was dealin')

MSRP Was 24K though so I guess the cheap price whent up a bit from 2003!

'06 GT listed at 27K not a big difference but they didnt have any and they weren't dealing on them anyway.

What a hoot!!! I just drove a nice shiny Black GT Turbo with all the trimmins' the going price was 31,000, I was quite shocked he said that he would take off 3500, so would 27,500 be a bad price? it only has 111 miles on it & I put 91miles of it on it Thursday, It sure did drive nice & the turning radius was alot better than my DCS#3.

Huh? Was the new black one a 5-speed? Cuz that's the only way the turning radius would get better.... And why the heck would you be trading in your DC???

Wow, I don't know about that. I got my '04 Black, 5 Speed GT for a lot less than that, like 3000 less....

What the heck was in that car to have a sticker over 30K? No one is going to buy a used PT Cruiser for over $30,000.

I took my trophy to the local dealer & showed them & not mention pic's there were a few customers, that were totally shocked! But they loved the pictures & had no clue that were such radical folks like this out in the world! The light show really blew 'em away! Maybe someone bought a Cruiser today, I'll have to go back & check!Tongue

I'm surprised you could find a dealer that even knew what it was? After mine(the second one), sat brand new in the showroom for 2 years, they reduced the price from 37000CDN to 25,300 including 4 new tires(flat spotted), a new battery(just because), the Mopar bug gaurd, Mopar slush mats, a locking gas cap, wheel locks, 6 left over 04 PT brochures, and a NOS 2001 can of PT Cruiser Root Beer. I guess they were happy to see it go. What a car!

Re: [tractorfix] Chrysler to offer new, cheaper PT Turbo model... Can't Post

Dear Tractorfix, I bought my Dream#3 PT from the local dealer July 2004, I have had my car serviced there quite regularly & They also donate PT Stuff for events I attend, so they are very familar with my car. Approx. 2 weeks ago I drove a beautiful Black GT Convertible, almost came close to trading it in. But last weekend after attending the Midwest Regional Rally, I thought ,"Oh Heck" I have a good one, besides I think the Dream3 is one of the best that came partially "tricked" out,if you know what I mean. So you have a very low numbered Dream 3...Lucky you, but I also noticed you writting something about it being a returned vehicle "Lemon Law"? what was the matter with? Have you had any problems? I talk with another PT DCS#3 owner who has already had the rack & pinion replaced & now something is going to have to be done to his tranny. I have had no problems, except here recently having spark plugs replaced, & now needing new tires. I only have 27,5000 miles on it. I do love going Cruzin with the moonroof opened, especially right now while the weather is cool. Let me know about your Dream.Smile
