Consumer Reports recommends the PT...

Cruiser as a "BUY" (CR top pick) and rates it above-average in RELIABILTIY, SATISFACTION, and DEPRECIATION. The summary review on Page 42 of the April 04 issue of the magazine states "The PT's above-average reliability allows us to recommend it."

My God this must be a first for this magazine. CR almost never recommends an American car....usually it is a foreign namplate of some kind. Hang this on the wall in a frame somewhere. I personally think this magazine is a bunch of crap and have always thought so as I never read it anymore nor abide by their recommendations. Have a great day! ----------

I remember after buying my PT in January 2003 that I checked Consumer Reports online and it had their recommended check mark. I was very happy to see that, because everybody thought I was nuts was for trading in my paid for SUV for the PT. I think the PT has had their highest marks from the beginning. ----------

Quote: ...I think the PT has had their highest marks from the beginning. Sorry, but not the first year (2001). This was because, although Consumer Reports found the PT Cruiser to be a very good car overall, its showing in the government's frontal crash tests was "dismal" and, therefore, it was NOT recommended. ----------

Maybe this will help - quoted form CR online: Its improved showing in a recent government 35-mph frontal-crash test and above-average reliability allows us to recommend the PT. Also, overall reliability is rated at above average for '01 and '02 and average for '03. According to their website a car has to be rated above average in reliability to get their recommendation - that's why I assumed the PT got it '01 as well as '02. Sorry. ----------

Quote: Good questions. I don't have the anwsers but would think either DC made some front-end modifications to the car or that the government's testing standards changed... You may want to write CR and see what they have to say, or maybe, check out this site to see if it can give you answers to your questions: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Search.cfm Good luck. Daimler Chrysler made NO changes to the front end. They were disgusted when the initial crash tests came out as a 2 out of 5 stars for the driver and they fought it briefly but since the car was a sellout anyway, they said screw it. The actual number was 2.8 which got rounded down to a 2 rather than up to a 3. Chrysler admitted that they knew it was not a 5 star but that it certainly wasn't a 2 either. Two years later, it was retested and came out as a 4 for the driver which Chrysler had maintained it was all along. According to police reports, the PT does remarkably well in real world crash tests for occupant protection and in this world of constantly rising insurance rates, my premiums for the PT have actually been going down in reflection of it's admirable accident performance. The demographics of who actually drives these cars probably also helps with the insurance rates. Not many young people driving PT's. Cheapest car to insure in our area is the Buick Regal. Nobody steals them and the majority of people who drive them are in the 50 to 65 year old bracket which is statistically the safest drivers on the road. Aggression levels are down by this age, reflexes are still reasonable, and they still drive fast enough to not be an impediment to traffic flow. As more and more older people find out how easy the PT is to get into and out of without being a land yacht, perhaps it will become the new Regal. ----------

I just purchased my first PT yesterday and I did my research as throughly as I could. I was going to buy one anyway because since I saw my first PT I had the missle lock on it and had to wait to find the right one to come to me. I am 32 years old and I absolutely love the PT. It is a young persons cr due to its hip looks and functionality. Plus it is just a fun car to drive and travel in. But the crash test ratings never bothered me because I am not interested in going MACH 2 with my hair on fire. I am interested in the style and looks and attitude that the PT has naturally. I think Chrysler has tapped into a gold mine by designing a Retro looking vehicle that harkens back to the old "gamngster cars" of the 20's and the beach Boys style with the woody PT. This car truely defies a definition. I LOVE IT!!!!! ---------- He who loses control, Loses GEAUX Ball State Cardinals!!! GEAUX New Orleans Hornets!!! GEAUX Buffalo Bills!!! GEAUX Florida Marlins!!!
