Cooling system Can't Post

Hello,

I have to add coolant frequently (once a month) without any visible leaks in the system.
Maybe the head gasket?

Regards,
Robert

Never have to add on mine. I'd have it pressure checked. Wave

I doubt it's the head gasket. Easy check for that is to pull the oil dip stick and check the oil. If it looks like cappuccino, head gasket is blown. Also if it was the head gasket the engine would sputter and you'd have overheating issues.

If there really are NO visible leaks, I'd say the most likely culprit is the water pump. Leaks are sometimes hard to see, so it could be a hairline crack in the radiator or a small crack in one of the hoses somewhere.

I would concur. A pressure check would provide the best test.

Re: [sent1] Cooling system Can't Post

I will have it checked out one of these weeks, but the syntetic oil certanly does not look like cappucino.
I have to bring it in anyway for a brake / suspension issue soon.
Will keep you informed.

Thanks Robert

A defective radiator cap ($5 to $8) could cause those symptoms.

Re: [arubapt] Cooling system Can't Post

Wave Hi there,

I agree with SGhost about having a defective radiator cap. On my dad's 98 S-10, the coolant recovery bottle had to be filled every oil change because it was bone dry. We eventually noticed dry streaks that lead from the cap on down the side of the radiator. When we took off the cap there was a little crud, but nothing that looked like a real problem. To be on the safe side we bought a new radiator cap and so far the recovery bottle seems to be staying full. (knock on wood)

Try going el-cheapo first, then try something else.

Good Luck

Re: [PLee722] Cooling system Can't Post

Are you loosing coolant and freon?

For the freon, I do not know of any quick repairs. For the A/C system (freon) I think your best bet is to take it in for service because the A/C system is under high pressure.

If you are loosing coolant. Check for leaks, watch fluid levels, check the oil and make sure it looks like oil, and check the radiator cap (when cool) for any evidence of leaks.

Color is imporatant too.

Freon: looks like water=clear
Coolant: pink/red

Re: [arubapt] Cooling system Can't Post

Hi,...I have had this trouble, too. Had it pressure checked and they told me that the engine was having a pressure build up that was too high. The guy said that when that happens, the coolant is kicked out into an overflow or somethingto release the engine pressure, and that makes you coolant, and then, as a result, causes the car to overheat. I am a female and this didn't make a lot of sense to me, but that was what they told me..maybe I should buy a new radiator cap as you all suggested!
