Delayed Start

So, how many of you cruisers out there start your PT as soon as you insert the ignition key vs. waiting for the factory set time to ignite the engine? Meaning... do you wait until the entire chime cycle ends before starting your engine? I know, I know... y'all are thinking, where does this guy come up with all this crap? ---------- "Just Cruisin' Lite."

I didn't know I was supposed to wait on chimes. I turn the ignition, but it takes me a moment to get settled (put on seatbelt, adjust temp, plug in iPod) before I pull out. ----------

While picking up some OEM parts at the dealer the other day that I ordered, I was talking with one of the Chrysler mechanics about the chimes when you turn the key on. He stated that the chimes are there to let you know when to start the engine because the fuel system requires 3 seconds for proper pressure to the system in order to start properly. After the final chimes sound, the fuel system is ready to be started. I did notice in the early mornings if I start it right away without waiting for the chimes to finish, the car will start sluggishly and if I wait for the chimes to finish, the car purrs like a kitten. Just a little FYI folks. ---------- "Just Cruisin' Lite."

Good information. I'm not even aware of chimes! I will pay attention when I get in the Cruiser after work to day. Thanks for the info! ----------

You have got to STOP talking to Chrysler techs!! you are getting way too much mis-information. The chimes have nothing to do with waiting before starting your PT. The Chime is a federal law to make sure you fasten your seat belt. If you fasten your seat belt before you put the key in the ignition you will not get a chime. Now it is true that your fuel pressure will bleed off over time and if you turn the key before you have sufficient pressure you can have slow or sluggish starting. What I do is wait for the security light to go off then start. That gives the fuel pump time to make sure the fuel system is charged. By the way, I hate that chime so fasten my belt before turning the key. FYI - Back in 1974 there was a federal law that you could not start your car if the drivers seat belt wasn't fastened and there were sensors in the drivers seat to insure that. There were so many complaints that they repealed the law and substituted the chime. ----------

You are partialy correct. The chimes sound to let you know to put your seatbelt on and then there is a single chime to let you know the system is ready. I just tested with and without the seatbelt on. You will get a few chimes if the seatbelt is not on and then you will get one chime 5 seconds after the key is on. If wearing the seatbelt prior to inserting the key, you will only get one chime in about 5 seconds to let you know the system is ready. Before the single chime, certain idiot lights on the dash will go off and then it will chime. I don't say the Chrysler mechanics know it all but, they are paid to know these things. ---------- "Just Cruisin' Lite."

I have a '04 with stage I. I just tried mine and I get no chime when I have my seat belt fastened and I could not find anything in my owner's manual. So, maybe it is something on the newer models, but it doesn't happen on mine. Anybody else have this chime after 5 seconds? ----------

My humble apology, I left the key on and did get a chime at 11 seconds, so it seems I stand corrected. Although I can't find anything in the owners manual about waiting for the chime before starting, I did find in my Service manual where it defines the chime system and what will make it chime. There is no reference to "system" or "car" or any other reference to anything other than the folowing: Door ajar Key in ignition Exterior lamps ON Turn signal ON low fuel Park Brake Seat belt Warning light ON Reverse (manual Transmission) Doing a little more digging, I found a reference to the chime going off after about 10 seconds indicating that the oil warning light is ON if the engine is not started. In conclusion I found nothing indicating a chime when the system, engine, PCM or anything else is "ready". ----------

Thanks for sharing the info. I never realized my car had chimes (other than the seatbelt or hand brake), but I remembered to give it a whirl Sunday, and sure enough, there they were! I am going to try to break myself of this habit. ----------

After reading the string about chimes, does anyone know how to turn the volume down on the chime itself? Mine is so dang loud it wakes up the whole neighborhood if I have my door open and I have to cover my ears till it goes off! I have a 2006 Touring. Many thanks! Dee

Yeah, I went thru my manual several times and can't find anything to back up what the service tech told me at the dealer? I guess he just likes to hear himself talk? ---------- "Just Cruisin' Lite."
