Diesel PT Cruisers in US Can't Post

Since our PT Cruisers are made in Mexico and I believe they are still sending PT Cruisers to Europe with a diesel engine (2.0, I think), and the diesel standards in Europe require the new low emission type diesel fuel, WHY aren't we able to buy a PT Cruiser in the US with a diesel engine? Seems to me this is ready market especially with the rising cost of fuel. VW is planning to produce
a diesel hybrid that will get about 69 mpg. I think it is a year or so away from being imported into US. The current exchange
rate will drive up the price though.

If PT Cruisers are still being produced with diesel engines, Chrysler could capture a large share of the econo car market by shipping the diesel equipped ones to the US.

Re: [BillV] Diesel PT Cruisers in US Can't Post

Diesel emission requirements in the US are much tougher than in Europe. On top of that, the higher ups don't think Americans want Diesel engines. Also, there are at least 5 states where Diesel cars can't be sold now because they can't meet the California emissions requirement. Vermont is one of them!! I would buy one in a minute if they could be sold here. There are a couple of companies that are trying to meet the emission requirements with special scrubbers for NOx and are planning on selling Diesels that meet all 50 state requirements, of course we will pay the price for such technology. Of course Chrysler is not on the short list of companies planning on selling Diesels.

Re: [Bluephrog] Diesel PT Cruisers in US Can't Post

I thought the problem was non-availability of low sulfur fuel which I understand is available in most communities now. Or,
is it now ultra low sulfur fuel needed?

It's interesting that Chrysler continues to sell Dodge trucks with the 6.7 liter Cummins Diesel engine.

I believe the 2.0 Diesel engine made for export in PT Cruisers to Europe was a Mercedes engine. Surely the Cummins 6.7 liter engine puts out a lot more emissions than the 2.0 one.

I'm sure there are those that have reservations about diesel engines. Too bad though. I've had three VWs with diesel
engines (one turbo) and one Mercedes diesel. Wish I still had them. They just keep on ticking.

I rented a Toyota van in Scotland last year and put around 1,000 miles on it. It was very quite, strong, and economical. It
did not smoke much at all. It was a 2.0 engine, I assume made by Toyota.

The US now requires the low sulfur fuel too. The emission regs for cars and trucks are not the same. They are much tougher for cars than for trucks. Chev/GMC, Ford and Dodge all have Diesel engines for their trucks and can be sold in all 50 states. Diesel trucks are very popular for their power and economy as compared to a gasoline engine.

Yet another good article at: http://www.greencarcongress.com/...bosch_us_diesel.html

Hybrids are clearly in the future. But, if folks keep the dialog going, diesel hybrids could be even
better than the gas ones.Dance

The diesel engines need to get at least 40 MPG to be worth it. Over here diesel is already at $4.36 per gallon.

Mpg is a factor.

The best mpg I got with my 1985 VW Quantum Turbo Diesel (1700 cc) was 53 mpg at a steady 55 mph. Trip was
about 350 miles. Normal mpg was always 38 to 46 mpg. Another positive aspect to diesels is long engine life.
Timely oil changes are highly encouraged to help assure long engine life.
