Do you really use the boot?
|

We picked up our TE turbo lite droptop in June. Since that time we haven't used the boot cover once. It sits in the garage gathering dusk. It takes up too much room in the trunk, and it might be nice if I were going to be in a parade. In the meantime it will stay where it is. How many of you other droptop drivers actually go through the trouble of putting it on regularly? Here in East central Illinois there are a handful of droptops, but I have yet to see a boot cover. Is it really necessary? ----------

Hi PurpleTub! I find myself using the boot very seldom myself. Usually, it is sitting on a shelf in my garage. I only get it out on days that I am sure will not rain. Also, I have used it for two parades as well. But even with this small use, I think I use it more than most people I have heard from, as they are mostly concerned with crime. In my case it makes a big difference knowing I can just leave the top down when parked in town. ----------

howdy PurpleTub, I use the boot as much as I can. The only time i don't use the boot is when I take a short drive from work to home and I am in a hurry to get home. But everytime i go out with the top down I put the boot on. I think it looks better with it on then off. Now that it is winter i keep the boot in my garage, but as soon as it warms up I will be having the boot in the PT someplace either in the trunk or the back seat. I also have bought the windscreen to go on also. from what it looks like, it will cover up the back seats, so the boot will have to be in place to make it look right. you all have a super cruizin day ----------

Hey Purple Tub, being and old sports car owner, 1965 Austin Healy 3000, I had an upholstery guy make me a full toneau cover for my rag top. It starts at the back of the back seat and goes on to the dashboard. Like in days of old it has a zipper in the front so I can open just the drivers compartment or the whole front. I use a telescoping shower rod in a sleeve to hold the toneau cover tight behind the front seats. My guy made the sides so the go down into the window channel in the door. I did have to put 3 snaps on the passenger door to keep it in place at speed. The beauty of having it go into the window channel is that I can still put the windows up with it on and even the whole top if I wanted to. I use it a lot even today when the temperature was in the upper 20s in the morning. ----------

Well, the reason I don't use the boot is because I can see over the top/back better without it. It adds an extra couple of inches that cover up the back corner views. I absolutely love the way I can put my top up or down at a stoplight. So quick...just like rolling a window up or down. I kind of gloat at being such a spectacle, a form of showing off, haha. So, our boot is in a box in the attic. I was looking at the 2006 convertibles. What a pity that they still have not figured out how to make the trunk hinge opening on the bottom of the trunk lid so you don't have to bend over so far to load the trunk. Other than that, I still love my joymobile as much as m dog!!!! That's a lot! It's like having another pet. The other day we rode by the dealership and I patted her dash, told her "look! That's where I first laid eyes on you!!" I'm sick, I know, haha!!!! Happy cruisin with your air conditioner blowing!!! Linda in Houston ---------- linda

Hi PurpleTub, I'm new with the convertible scene so I'm not real sure what the right answer would be if it is necessary or not. I wasn't using mine at first but a friend told me yesterday that I really should, even on short trips... this is mainly to keep stuff like bugs and bird s.hit off of the inside of the ragtop. Makes sense to me so I use it now. Becky ----------

I use mine too as much as I can. I don't leave it on if I'm not close by. I take it off and put it away and raise the top. It's just tooo easy to steal. Just to update. We still haven't used the boot after a year. I found that the boot takes as much space as 1.5 carryon bags in the truck. So much for storage if you use it. We did a 2600 mile trip in our ragtop in May. Couldn't have done it with the boot. We needed all the room for all the things we bought along the way. The boot will continue its sojourn in the garage. ----------

The only time we don't use the boot is locally. I think it makes the PT look so much nicer! We're not really worried about the blind spots, if we can't see we just punch up the rear camera. If we go in some place to eat or shop, we leave the boot cover on. We have interior and exterior motion detectors with the Viper alarm so you can't really get within 2 feet of the car before it chirps a warning. Matt: The rearview camera is mounted under the bumper in the license plate niche as seen here. This was a professional installation but I'm not sure how or where the wiring was run. I'm sure if you take it to an installer, they could show you how it would be run. The great thing about the set up we have is that we can switch to the rearview camera while driving which helps with the blindspots if needed and while driving it splits the screen to you have both the camera and nav screen still showing. I've included a picture, I hope it helps! - Greg ---------- Wendy & Greg, Members of the PTCC, PTOC and Del Val PT Cruisers 2005 PT Cruiser Convertible GT Dark Plum Pearl Coat, Dark Slate Gray Interior, 5-Spoke Chrome Wheels Audio/Video/Navigation Pioneer Hardware: AVIC-N2 Head Unit, Steering Wheel Remote with Voice Command, XM NavTraffic Unit, iPod Unit, Premier 6 Disc CD Changer, Rear View Camera. I agree that it takes up too much space in the trunk. I have a million dollar idea for one of you entrepreneurs out there... create a retractable shelf for the trunk that the boot can sit on. This will raise it up off the floor of the trunk and give us more room to store things! Quote: Just to update. We still haven't used the boot after a year. I usually put the boot on. I found that driving with it off I was getting alot of dust and dirt gathering in the exposed roof area. ----------
