Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

I posted this over on the PTCrew.com Forum, but figured the good folks here would like to see it since you have this neat Dream Cruiser section!
I emailed DC requesting the breakdown of 5-speed vs Autostick 2003 DCS2's, and here's the response they sent:
____________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Brian:

Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation
regarding production figures for the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Our records show 297 model year 2003 GT Dream Cruiser Series 2 vehicles
were produced with manual transaxles. The number produced with
automatic transaxles was 1,892.

Thank you again for your email.

Sincerely,

William
Senior Staff Representative
DaimlerChrysler Customer Assistance Center

_______________________________________________________________________________________
This confirms that the total number produced (2189) was a far cry from the 7500 originally planned.
No big surprise there, given the co$t

Brian

Re: [sca037] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

Thanks for the info!

Cost is only one factor. DC never gave them a honest chance. Just like the Seamist greens, DCS3, DCS4, Route66, etal...
They don't let them stay in production long enough for the majority of people to actually see them. In the case of our DCS2's, dealers couldn't order them until the second week in January 2003 and then DC stopped accepting orders by end April! (According to my dealer) So if you weren't one like me waiting for the tangerine to show up or you weren't lucky enough to stumble onto one in the showroom you were SOL before summer even started.
Worse senario for Seamist green, I think they were only offered for 2 months in the end of 2002 as a 2003 model. Hardly gives anyone a fighting chance to see one let alone order. Plus they were only offered during the crappiest selling months around these parts. Who is going to shell out for a unique vehicle to drive it around the snow right away?
Look how quick they pulled the plug on the 66's. Good grief, people around here are just starting to dig out of winter and consider car shopping, and one option is dead already.

Wow Paul, I had no idea to what extent the timing of the various models' availability played a role.
Sounds like if you hear about a special edition being planned that you want, you had better run (don't walk) down to the dealership and plunk down some ca$h before the window of opportunity closes!
That might explain why the Autosticks outnumber the 5-speeds by a 6-to-1 ratio....dealers ordering the cars to sell off the showroom floor.
Thanks for the insight Hat
Brian

Re: [sca037] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

Mine is number 1999 - autostick - with 41,000 miles on it now. I didn't realize that production of the DC2 was that low. It's amazing how the car draws comments, particularly on the interior. Everybody (non-cruisers mostly) thinks it was a custom job. I originally had a 2001 Shale Green 28F model, and after driving a turbo I decided (after a lot of soul searching) to trade it for the DC2. I was looking at the GT, but found this on a dealer's lot in Davis, CA. Couldn't resist since I had always liked the Tangerine.

Re: [TangerinePT] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

In SoCal myself - I've only seen three so far out here in 3 years time. I bought mine right off of the showroom floor (only 12 miles on the odometer and nobody had test drove it) even though I already owned a 2001 Limited Taupe PT. I had to sell the '01 it myself because the dealer wouldn't give me fair value as a trade. So, I had 2 PT's for about 2 months. I'm glad I upgraded!!

Re: [sca037] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

We are making the logical assumption that they went numerically down the line with the dash plaques. I was told a time ago what happens when you assume. It is possible they just grabbed a box of plaques from the shelf for 1st shift workers and then the next shift pulled from somewhere else. It's also possible that the people answering the emails from Chrysler have no idea what the production plants do/did.

Re: [orangecrush] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

I think it is realistic to think the guys at the plant grabbed the dash plaques out of boxes and affixed them to the cars in whatever order they came out.
I know that with the 1986 Shelby GLH-S cars (of which 500 were planned and produced) the first 50 or so had their dash plaques numbered in actual production sequence, but after that it all went out the window. At least in that case the actual number produced did use up all the dash plaques they made Wink

Re: [Stan] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

Well, it's nice to meet my DC3 family after all this time. I get a lot of lookers, from other PT drivers. I LOVE the color. Some may not. I have not had ANY problems, including the orange leather seats that fade on some I have read about. I think I got a good one. And even though I'm #995, now you say I could be a random number on the production line......that sucks! How hard is it to put a number plate on a dash board as it rolls off the assembly line?? Anyway, nice to meet ya'll! Susie from KY.

PTGuido,

I had the PTeaser Illusion Rear Bumper, and CatBack exhaust system put in about a year ago. Now I'm thinking about the front end. I know you have the Classiq Grille with Smoothie fascia but was wondering if you also saw the Roadstar Grille with Smoothie fascia. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. Also, did you ever consider the cowl induction hood?

Re: [Stan] Dream Cruiser Series 2 (tangerine) Production Can't Post

Stan, both are nice, but when I saw the mesh grill in San Diego last year I knew that one was it. I almost had the Roadstar grill installed the year before after Cruiserfest, but changed my mind. A friend later changed from the Retro grill to the Roadstar on his car, so that was another reason I went with the mesh...didn't want to copy him. But I guess the main reason was that I liked the finish of the mesh grill better than the Roadstar. More of a chrome look. But both are great grills. I never really considered the cowl induction hood (my friend, PT Grumpy) already has that, too. But of the hoods I have seen I like that one best.

When I traded my 2001 Shale Green 28F model for the Dream Cruiser (I had made a lot of changes to 01), I swore I wouldn't change anything on the Tangerine. So much for that. The only thing I still haven't done, and probably won't, is adding underbody lighting. I had a few problems with the 01's lights, and didn't want to go that route on the '03. Love the car, though, and love the turbo.
