Expired Coolant? Can't Post

I looked in the archives for references to this, but found none.

Has anyone noticed that the Mopar HOAT antifreeze/coolant has a shelf life of 2 years? I bought some coolant in 2005 to top off the resivoir and now that I need to top off the resivoir again I noticed an expiration date. The bottom of the bottle had the date MFG: 10-22-2005 and USE BY: 10-22-2007. I have never heard of coolant having an expiration date before. I asked 2 mechanics (1 was at the Chrysler dealer) and I was told not to use expired coolant, so I guess it is off to buy a $20+ bottle of antifreeze/coolant.

One other question though.

Why would the antifreeze have an expiration on the bottle of 2 years, but not in the car which lasts 5 years?

Thanks.

CoolHi Leo.My mechanic strongly tells people to change thier "5 year" coolant every 2 years because he has seen extensive damage to cooling systems due to breakdown much past that point.I find it interesting that you have found a coolant expiration date with a 2 year limit from date of manufacture because it corellates perfectly with my mechanics advice.Gotta love a really great mechanic. All the best and God Bless.......Mike

CoolNever ever take your PT to the "Stealership" for any work unless you want to get ripped off.I always take my PT to my mechanic, which I have done for the past twenty years.I am a good nurse but a lousy mechanic and as such he does all the work on my cars including coolant flushes and changes. All the best and God Bless........Mike

Jim,
It's on the botton of the radiator housing, engine side, drivers side near the trans cooler hoses. Remember it is only a 1/4 -1/2 turn counterclockwise to open it. Turn it more than that and you'll have a mess and a hell of a time getting the stem back in.

Coolant systems dont really needs flushed unless you have not changed your coolant for a really long time. a simple drain and fill would be fine. What i do it drain the radiator fill it back up / water run the for a bit w/ teh Rad. cap off so i can see teh coolant wait until the water has mixed w/ the old coolant again drain again and fil teh Rad. back up w/ some Mopar antifreeze 50/50 run again until the thermostat opens and all the air bubbles come out, you see the water level drop really quick then fill until it comes out the top of the rad. then cap her off and fill the overflow to spec and done.

Re: [eldersptgt] Expired Coolant? Can't Post

I had a terrible sequel and could not figure out where it was coming from- alternator, steering pump, radiator fan- couldn’t figure it out. Service manual showed the water pump under the, and driven by the timing belt. Drained and ran engine flush through the engine and squeal is gone! Plan to have the timing belt changed in my 110 k miles 2003 GT.
