GPS operation

I am considering getting a GPS. My wife will only drive "back-suburban streets," and is terrified of going out on the highway. We have found ways to get around our area by using the back streets, but I wonder if I get a GPS, can I actually program my own route to nearby stores, can I add my own waypoints, and so on, or do the GPS units only calculate a route for you, and that's the only option? I also am on a budget, so about $350 is the maximum I'd be willing to spend. Any suggestions? Thanks! ---------- Ted in Columbus, Ohio 2005 Limited Turbo Lite, Linen Gold. If you are rich enough, the factory RB1 is very nice. I'm not so like Cruiser RN I bought a Magellan Roadmate 300, but got mine used off of ebay for $124, complete. I just had to download a new map to it with the supplied USB cable. ---------- CaryB (and Sugar, the Super Tabby!) 2003 Limited non-turbo, rolling disco! More db's than hp! My PT

I had the Magellan but replaced it with the Garmin c330. The Magellan has a hard drive in it which failed. Tech support was not very helpful. The Garmin which can be bought for around $200, is much smaller. It uses and comes with a 1gb SD card. I think if you check various sites (google search) you will find a preference for the Garmin products. I also have used a TomTom One and I still prefer the Garmin. Just my opinion. Walmart has it for $238 on their web site. oops, here's an even better deal: Looks like $199 after rebate http://pepboys.shoplocal.com/pepboys/default.aspx?action=detail&flashbrowse=y&storeid=2314813&rapid=441098&pagenumber=1&listingid=-2092875970&ref=%2fpep boys%2fdefault.aspx%3faction%3dbrowsepageflash%26storeid%3d2314813%26pagenumber%3d1%26rapid%3d441098%26prvid%3dPepBoys-070819 ----------

A good GPS is the greastest help to get around. I've been using a Garmin for 3 years and love it. Have been everywhere and can't get lost. You can make "routes" and save them to the GPS. I just upgrades my Garmin to a new model with bluetooth and I have my older unit "2610" for sale for $250.00. If interested, send me a e-mail or PM. ---------- Jack Smith (Smittys PT) Webmaster Colorado Cruiser Club

Hi Cary.Your experience is interesting because my Roadmate came preloaded with the continous U.S map unlike yours that you had to load.Guess I was just lucky in that regard. It is nice to know that after it eventually dies the Garmin is a more effective unit and will be the next one I buy. Thanks for your imput and I learned something new.God Bless.......Mike ---------- Mike Casabianca His: 2001 Black LE with Auto Transmission, BullDog Signs Flames, WeatherTec wind deflectors, cargo area mat, PT trash can, PT valve stem caps and Dart's coldair intake, chrome tail and headlight bezels, chrome bumper inserts, chrome license plate pillow, chrome fender trim, 1940's retro chrome on front and back fenders, door spears, chrome hatch door trim, chrome gas door, brushed chrome door sills, billet door pins, custom "BlueHaze" dash mat, MRK Group lugnut covers, dome light trim, etc. and the chrome goes on...... We have a magellen 2000. Cost around $200.00 at Christmas. When you use it you must use a complete address including street numbers and zip codes and sometimes that's not good enough. I don't drive On the main roads any more so I know the back road thing. That's why my wife does most of the driving. You can buy local road maps with every street on it. Try Book Binders. ---------- big jim

Quote: I stumbled across this today on how to choose a GPS system: http://money.aol.com/...20071129172909990001 Pretty good article... covers a lot of what to consider. One other feature that I did not see mentioned in that article is the availability of an external antenna. This is a useful feature especially if you are in a city with lots of high-rises (or any other area that makes it difficult for the GPS to "see" the satellite). External antennas are either the flip open kind and/or a jack is available to connect the external antenna. If there is only a jack and you actually have to buy the external antenna, it's about $100 option. Also with the ones that come with preloaded maps, a lot of times the ones that are on sale have maps that are several years old. Yes the maps can be updated but that's another $100 or there abouts. So if that matters to you, you may consider buying one with 2008 maps.

Just make sure whichever you get,you keep the map updated to the newest version... The State/County/Feds/city change a road and your map isnt updated then wellllllllllllllllllllllllllll.. Now this is rare, BUT trust me, Been there, seen it, done it Dang lady kept saying turn here ..I am thinking look lady there is NO road here to turn on..Then she would start telling me to U turn and then once I did,it was turn here and the cycle continued. Found out later.. Yeah... there use to be a road there. Cool thing about most GPS's . If your snoozing and miss the voice ( I hear so many sometimes I cant discern) saying turn here..It will just re route you and you still get there IF you pay attention. ---------- AUCRZR on Horsepower TV Show http://webpages.charter.net/tigertown/hptv.3g2

I eventually got a Garmin c340. It is now at Amazon for about $225. Works great! I'd never travel without one again, and it is even helpful locally.
