GT on order & thanks to all before me

I buy a new car about every ten years whether I need it or not. So I have a lot of time to think and do research. Although I rely on reviews and Consumer’s Review in part, my final decision was based on all the excellent information received on this forum (as a visitor). Thanks to all. Based on this member advice I’m avoiding the automatic and the basic model. So it’s a GT. But now I have to wait 6 weeks or so to get a 5 speed. Although there are a fair number of PT convertibles in stock now at local dealers (Northwest WA), with the exception of a couple of basic models, they are all being shipped with automatics (and most every option, of course). The 180 HP turbo Touring model would have been fine with me, but Chrysler isn’t combing it with a 5 speed for some reason. Anyone know why? The dealer I have the order with didn’t have a clue. ----------

Welcome to the forum and the "fun world" of PT Cruisers, ckgrick. Don't really know why the "turbo lite" is not available with a 5-speed except, maybe, DC in it's ultimate wisdom, thinks if a consumer wants to drive a "stick" then he/she should go for the GT with its increased performance. Anyway, think you will like the GT--a really fun car to drive. Did you give the Autostick a test drive before selecting the 5-speed? I have driven both and they both perform well. At least for me, the Autostick is "the best of two worlds." IMHO, it is one of the very best automatic transmissions I have ever driven. ----------

Welcome from the other side of Washington State!!! You live in a gorgeous part of the country. What a place for cruisin'. If you decide to cruise east, let me know and we can check out some fun restaurants in Spokane. I know where they make the best margaritas!!! What color??? What color ragtop??? What mods are you going to do??? See ya somewhere on the highway. I will be looking for the "newbie" with the biggest grin!! ----------

Electric Blue (as per “She Who Must Be Obeyed”) and black top. I haven’t really thought much about mods yet. Once I get my hands on it although I’ve been scared off mods a little based on some forum comments on how the dealers use any excuse to avoid warranty coverage. The Inland Empire is good country…was stationed at Coulee Dam NRA (with the NPS) for a couple of years. Thanks for the welcome. ----------

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I haven’t even sat in a PT, let alone driven one. My only excuse is that living on an island makes it less convenient to actually walk into a dealer. The order was all done over the phone. My purchase decision is totally based on reviews and lurking in this forum. I like automatics fine (both current cars are automatics), but with a fun car and all the raves for the 5 speed I went for that. The best car I ever had was a 4 speed 1971 Datsun 240Z, so that experience is also probably impacting my decision. On the other hand, I just remember that the absolutely worst car I ever had, an MG Midget, was also a 4 speed. I guess I just thought it would be more fun and there aren't a lot of stoplights on hills around here. Do you think DC just thought they could make more money by not offering the 5 speed for the 180 Turbo? No, that couldn't be the reason. ----------
