Gas Mileage, Before K&N filter, After K&N Filter

Gas mileage for the first 5 tankfuls (LE, 5 speed)averaged 23.49. 0-1606 miles. Lowest mpg-20.39, highest mpg-25.71.Mileage for the next 6 tankfuls, AFTER installing K&N drop-in replacement, averaged 25.332 miles per gallon. 1606-3549 miles. Lowest mpg-22.93, highest mpg-26.85. An increase of 1.84 mpg. Now I'm sure some of this increase is also due to engine break in as well. Most of my driving has been highway. Just changed the engine oil with Mobil 1 so now I'll see if that helps it any more. Almost all of this has been without the A/C running also. Summer is coming, so that will also change it. I've seen some posts of people getting 29+mpg and so far I'm finding that a little hard to believe. As I said above, almost all of my driving has been on the highway, over fairly level terrain.

heeeeeeeey bch..........i was one of those that posted a 29.5 mile tank......that was on interstate 95 going south to florida with the cruise control set on 65 mph and running at night with less traffic.....the following tank was 28 mpg with the cruise set at 71mph........i generally let the tank fill up automatically and when it clicks off, i round up another 50 cents worth of gas (ie., if it click stops at $18.11, i put in $18.50)........that's about as accuarate as i can be from the outside as far as filling to a consistant level.......i have the 5 speed and that was with regular oil and without a k&n filter.......mobile one goes in this weekend and another trip to fla happens next month........when i get back from that, i'll be looking at the k&n....... .....will fyi the fla mpg asap pdq ok? My milage is in about 18.56 mpg(2155.4mi /116.12gal). But I attribute part of that to the Santa Monica mountain range that I have to cross every day to and fro work. Still MGP is a dissappointment. I was hoping to get at least in the low 20mpgs.Here's an interesting note: high octane fuel can possibly decrease performance(see owners manual p.170, first paragragh). Hmmmmm. I finished my first tank of 87 octane gas and it was 18.94 mpg (with a little remaining 92 octane fuel from the previous tanks, say less than 1/8tank). Nothing conclusive, yet. My questions for you folks above, what's the deal with "Mobil One" motor oil. Is that a good motor oil to use? Why? Are there any other similar motor oils I can use that helps improve performance? (I know that this is probably belongs in the "Perfmance" board, but since the thread started here, I thought I'd follow it thru) Thanks! ------------------ PTRocko ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Limited Silver 28G Automatic with roof rack, ABS, and butt warmers Kenwood Z828 deck Polk DX3065 fronts spkr Polk DX7 rear Front tinted windows 35% Rear splash guards [This message has been edited by PTRocko (edited 06-06-2001).]

Also, my K&N filter is on order. It should be arriving any day now. I might wait just a bit before I put it in just so I can see how the octane gas changes the milage. ------------------ PTRocko ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Limited Silver 28G Automatic with roof rack, ABS, and butt warmers :) Kenwood Z828 deck Polk DX3065 fronts spkr Polk DX7 rear Front tinted windows 35% Rear splash guards

Well, I've posted 29+ on highway trip and just came back from round trip from NC to Mich. On 1 leg, WVA to Ind.I got 30.02 mpg, car loaded with stuff, 2 people, no A/C driving speed limit +5, 28G with 16K miles, forced air intake, freeflow exhaust and mobil 1 oil. Last year on same trip, got 29.2 on same leg, less luggage, car had 5K on it.

I've started a "Motor Oil" thread in the performance board. Quote: I've seen some posts of people getting 29+mpg and so far I'm finding that a little hard to believe. As I said above, almost all of my driving has been on the highway, over fairly level terrain. How fast are you driving on the highway ? I have routinely gotten over 400 miles on a tank on a highway trip from Raleigh, NC to Boone, NC. That route includes some interstate at 65 mph and some 4 lane rolling hills at 65 mph followed by a pretty steep climb 45 mph into Boone. But, you gotta remember that same steep climb is a steep decent on the return trip. The 400 miles on a tank equates to 32 mpg. I did a 14,000 mile average for all types of driving and the most often tank full average was 29 with the overall average being 28. ---------- Paul J. Daoust
