Headlights stay on

When I lock my 2006 PTC the headlights stay on for about 1 minute, it seems. I wonder what purpose does that serve and if there is a way to disable that. ----------

My Cruiser is a much older model, but I would imagine it is a safety feature for seeing to get to your door, etc., at night. Someone more knowledgable than me will have to advise on how to disable it. ----------

I also think that external lighting is a safety feature for. I have noticed most new GM vehicles have that set up. If the PT is like that, there should be a way to disable it through the EVIC or a combination of key and transmission selector movements; the owners manual might say which one to use if it can be disabled. ----------

If I had that, I'd want to disable that too, because if the battery were on the weak side the car might not start next time I'd want to start it up. I've had too many older cars throughout my life that leaving the lights on for too long would kill the battery. It's the same reason I turn off the interior light "feature" that keeps the interior lights on for as long as it takes me to walk about 50 feet from the car, constantly looking back to make sure the lights actually went off. Paranoia, maybe, but it makes me uncomfortable. ---------- 2005 Bright Silver Convertible, 5 speed with 8 ball knob, chrome door spears, chrome gas cap door, chrome antenna bezel, chrome grill kit, chrome rear bumper pillows, chrome bumper trim, stainless antenna with flames, stainless door panel trim, chrome smoothies with baby moons, 2" wide "gangster" white walls, chrome tail light trim, K&N air filter element in a modified airbox and an oogah horn. Hmmm, what have I forgotten???

Dude...no offense but if your battery is that bad that it dies after 1 minute lighting, change it please! ----------

You might want to check it out as it may be set up that way already. I know that on my 2002 Caravan that if I leave the headlights on, they will automatically shut off after so many seconds/minutes even with the headlight switch turned on. I suspect my 01 Cruiser will do the same thing as the interior lights will shut off after a given time even if the doors are left open. I just don't personally need that feature as where I park it is well lit and if it isn't, I always have a flashlight with me. ---------- New owner 2001 Limited Edition. Shale Green Metallic. I particularly like the headlights on feature. I leave work at night and have to walk across a darkened uneven parking lot. Since I park with the front of the car facing in the direction of the building I have left, it makes it nice to avoid possible obstacles in my way, as when I unlock the doors with my remote the lights come on and I can see where I am going. Also, when I arrive home at night, I often forget to leave the outside light on or it is burned out. Since my driveway faces my front door, it gives me an opportunity to find the house key on my key ring without having to fumble in the dark for it. The duration that the lights stay on after I have locked/unlocked the car is adjustable on the on board computer. I leave it set at the longest time so I can take my time getting in the house and don't have to go like heck to rush into the house before I'm left standing in the dark.

After looking at the issue a little further, I now realize that it is not the locking of the car that turns the lights on, it is the unlocking of it. What must have happened was that I locked the car, forgot to get something from it, unlocked it to get it, locked it again, and walked away noticing how long the lights stayed on. The car is very new to me, so I am stil learning how it works. Sorry. If I just lock the car normally, the lights do not stay on. Also, while the lights turn on when I unlock it, they do turn off when the car is started. So, I guess it is not that bad. I wish the lights would go off when I lock it, but as some said, it may actually come in handy some day. Especially now that I know how it works. :)

You apparently were never a starving graduate student who owned a 66 Mustang (back when a 66 Mustang was worth about $500) with a "rebuilt" battery... If you leave the lights turned on, then turn the ignition switch off, the lights stay on for a while, 30-60 sec., even after turning them off. Maybe thats what you did. I've done the same thing.
