"Scrubbing Bubbles" bathroom cleaner is the best under-hood cleaner I've found. It needs little or no scrubbing; just spray it on and gently hose it off. Works great. Just don't get it on the waxed exterior of the car. It will take the wax right off! Terry 27G Silver Delivered 3/26/01 CarMax, Norcross GA

No doubt some will disagree with this but I've been doing it for years without a problem. I go to a pressure wash place, leave vehicle running and spray the engine down, rinse, close the hood and do the rest of the vehicle. My 99 Dodge dually, my PT, and my wifes 99 LHS all get done regularly. No problems encountered yet.

An old trick we use on show cars in the UK, is to use one of the gentlest de-greasers known to mankind, hair shampoo! it is also great at cleaning the oil off your hands when you have been working on an engine, you can get large amounts of this stuff from any supermarket, at a fraction of the cost of other products, and most are bio-degradeable kind to your skin, and leave your engine silky-soft and managable, they all contain the same detergent, but are wrapped up in other things to be kind to your hair, so get the big size no-brand clear-looking shampoo, spray it neat (with a small spray bottle 99cents at walmart) rub well in with an old sponge, leave 5mins, then hose it off and dry with a clean old rag, most people are surprised it does such a good job! its also great on the outside of the car!------------------ BLACK-MAGIC (dressed in black velvet) adorned by the "English grill" 28G LTD EDITION crusin since 25/5

Hey Kid, I am so glad this subject was posted. When I first got my car, I asked a fellow PT driver this very same question and was told- "Why would you want to do that, it is sealed tight and no dirt gets in there." Having come from my first show, I knew that was wrong information. I will print this off as now I know that one should clean the engine. Thank you so much for this, Mickey ---------- 2005 ELECTRIC BLUE CLASSIC Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you have decided to look beyond the imperfections

I was surprised to find that someone else would consider washing their car with shampoo..... my twist on this is that I use baby shampoo for the exterior of the car. Very mild it seems to work as well as anything I have ever tried. Very cheap and very effective! Since I wash Ptah (my PTs nickname) in the front yard on the grass, the biodegradable feature is nice. I was also reluctant to wash the engine compartment but this thread offers up some good ideas that I will try. Thanks for the hints. ----------

MORNING, This may be a dumb question but what else is new with me? My car now has 1600 miles on it, so does the engine need washing? How often? You are all going to laugh but I have never even raised the hood and looked at it. Scared what I will see! HELP! Hi Mickey: I'd open up the hood and take a look-see. In your case, the question of whether the engine should be cleaned or not was probably decided before you purchased Pete.... 1600 miles is not much under ordinary circumstances. Recommend: Open it up and look it over. If you have questions, find some of the photos of engine compartments that you can look at for reference... keep in mind that some may have mods that would change the appearance. Check your oil, tranny fluid, washer fluid levels, etc and get a bit familiar with what is under there. BTW, I am approaching 1600 miles on my Cruiser - just trailing a bit behind. Took a trip to the beach the other day and my dog brought a bunch of beach sand back which is really hard to get out of a car. ----------

I hope that doesn't mean that you need to find out how to even raise the hood? It doesn't get that bad under there. Of course, its totally up to you how often you want to get under there anyway. However, with your winters over there you might want to pop the hood and at least give it a rinse so the sloshy-road-grime doesn't build up. The real mess comes when you get oil leaks. What it comes down to is, if you show your PT, you want to take care of evey detail- including under the hood. If you don't show it you might want to check it when you wash the outside, but this is personal preference. I haven't cleaned the engine bay on Joe Dreamer once in the 6k miles I've driven him. I just clean the mirrored battery cover once in a while. Freedom to choose!--isn't that great? ---------- DC1 #1610--5-speed. Its got some stuff. '03 Inferno Red--Its getting some stuff too!

Thxs everyone for the answers but I am so excited as look at my Pete- a picture was finally small enough for this picture thing to take it! What do you think! Is it it cute or what? Remember it is a girl car! Petunia is her real name but too big for her plate! Anyway, I know how to open the hood so I will take a chance that nothing is going to jump out of there and bite me! lol. Don't you wish you were me? I will copy and try everyones suggestions, might take me a couple years to try them all. Thanks again, Mickey! ---------- 2005 ELECTRIC BLUE CLASSIC Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you have decided to look beyond the imperfections

Hi Mickey, Here are a couple of pics I said I'd send you. Some steam cleaning at the coin wash, painted the modesty cover and air intake. Summit Racing has kits for the colored tubing in a variety of colors. The kit comes with several different sizes of split tubing, matching tape and connectors. Price + shipping costs $20.00. I only used about 1/2 of it. Slipfit. BTW It's got 118,000 miles on it. ---------- If it's gonna happen - it's gonna happen out there.

THXS SLIPFIT, Love those red wires or whatever they are. I wish a cold air intake was only 20 bucks. See Sent1, someone thinks I know something. Still haven't raised my hood. But I will, give me courage! I did use my new tire gauge and put air in my own tires. That is a start. I need opinions: I decided to go with Red and chrome. So I want painted light covers. Would you go for blue or red? Red would be easier to match as no match but Electric blue would be harder to get right. Would that look like a foreigners car, you know what I mean? I do not want it too look too trashy. Then the grilL, what about red and blue, you know strips, the grill bars I guess. Like paint three or so red? Sorry about off thread, I appreciate all the suggestions on washing the engine. Now if I can only get over the hurdle of opening the thing, afraid I can not get it to close right. Guess I could do it at the installers just in case plus I can ask him what everything is, great idea! MICKEY ---------- 2005 ELECTRIC BLUE CLASSIC Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect.
