Hum coming from wheels
|
Can't Post

|
Hello, I have noticed in the past week a humming noise coming from the car as I drive. It sounds as though it is coming from the front driver side wheel. It seems to go away when ever I turn the wheel slightly to the right or am making a right. The car drives perfectly straight so I'm pretty sure it isn't an alignment issue. I have done several searches on this site but couldn't find anything. What do you think it could be? ----------

Check for things in the tread of the tire i.e. bits of stone, metal etc. loose tread. then check for wheels bearing, cv joints. Also check tire wear pattern. Low tread will cause noise. ----------

Just to let veryone know it was the driver's side wheel bearing that needs replacing. I'll do it myself because the mechanics I went to see wanted to charge me either 2-5 hours labour to do the job. ----------

My right front bearing needs to be replaced. Did you replace the bearing yourself? Did you need to have the bearing pressed in by a shop or were you able to do it yourself?

Quote: Just to let veryone know it was the driver's side wheel bearing that needs replacing. I'll do it myself because the mechanics I went to see wanted to charge me either 2-5 hours labour to do the job. I've replaced bearings & hub on both sides. It's a fairly easy job, but time consuming. You'll need to remove the steering knuckle from the strut mount, lower balljoint, and tie rod end. Careful with the cv joint & axle assembly. You should do a good inspection of the axleshaft while it's accessible. How's the condition of the hub? I ask because both mine were pretty chewed up on the backside and required replacement. The wheel bearings are a double raced set and it's doubtful you'll have the tools to safely press the bearing into the steering knuckle, then the hub into the bearing/knuckle sub-assembly. I brought mine in to the shop for this task. Each one set me back $50.00 per, but at least it was done right. Buy yourself the best bearing you can afford. Cheaper ones will eventually wear out again and then you end up re-doing the repair. If you've never changed a bearing, axle, control arm bushing or balljoint in a PT before, you'll probably spend between 3 - 5 hours to do the repair. It's a learning curve thing. Don't forget a new cotter pin for the axleshaft. Regards! ---------- Intense Blue Pearl... Yeah, Baby! 2003 GT - 5 Speed Getrag - Factory Loaded W/Ghost Flames, Borla Cat Back Dual Exhaust. Thanks for the great information! I've done many wheel bearings but not on FWD. I'll leave this one to the experts! Thanks again for the quick post.
