Interior Color Change Help Needed
|
Can't Post
|
|
Here we go Went to a local Custom Auto Shop here today and asked about changing the color of the dashboard instrument panel and the passenger side airbag plate Our 2005 Convertible is a cool vanilla color on the exterior The two pieces mentioned on the interior are grey for some reason The shop said they would not advise having them removed and painted as they are a material that would not accept paint very well and the airbag would have to be re-programmed at a substantial cost That sounded odd Been all over the net and cannot find any site that offers these two pieces alone Several sites ofer dash kits for around the radio, a/c controls and consoles So, does anyone know of a link for these two particular interior dash pieces or overlays that can be painted to match the outside cool vanilla color ? ---------- LELLY and DAVE 05' Convertible

The passenger side airbag is behind the cover you are talking about. Nothing would have to be reset in reference to the airbag. And yes, you can paint them. Here's my wife's, airbrushed and clear coated.

Seemed odd when the custom shop acted as if they were not interested in helping at all Kept saying you had to disconnect the airbag, remove the cover and then on the re-install, the airbag had to be reset to the cars computer in order for it to be active to inflate on collision Think I would like to have mine painted still instead of just an overlay with 3M So did the airbrush artist remove the cover John or just mask off the dash and paint your wifes while still installed in the vehicle ? Afraid to try and pry my cover off for fear of inflating the airbag now ---------- LELLY and DAVE 05' Convertible

The guy that airbrushed it is very busy and flies out to Las Vegas once a month to give classes on airbrushing, and this being a small job for him, I took the airbag out and left it with him. I think it 3 weeks all together. He called us in to approve it before he clear coated it. To take the airbag out, you have to remove the "A" pillar covers, center console trim (radio trim), dash top and the trim piece between the glove box and door. There are 6 or 8 screws that hold the airbag cover on PLUS it has 4 tabs that lock in into a channel at the top. The first time is a little tricky. The airbag itself does not have to come out and is fully functional without the cover. Design Brilliance is who did the work. Anoldhippy, contact them and you can always send your cover out here to PA for him to work on it. http://www.designbrilliance.net The PT in his portfolio is Tammy's , founder of the Del Val PT Cruisers here in PA. ---------- John & Terry "His"-2002 Inferno Red Touring Edition "Hers"-2003 Electric Blue Limited Edition

I've been interseted in this too. I knew before I bought my PT that those two parts of the dash were painted to match the body of the car in most PTS, but when my Black 06 got to the dealer and I went to look at it, I was disappointed to find the dash covers in a silver grey color. Local shop told me they would do black and clear coat at a good price if I brought them just the parts, they didn't want anything to do with the disassembly. Can you give an idea of how long it might take to remove those parts? And how tough is the dash top to get up, it's the only part of the process that sounds a touch frightening...? ---------- CreepyPT - Brian Kansas City, MO http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2477248 (Take a look, and rate my ride!)

I guess I could get both the instrument cluster and airbag covers off in 30-45 minutes. The dash top is easy, Remove "A" pillar covers and radio trim, only 2 screws behind the radio trim piece and pull the dash towards you and up. The hardest part was the tabs at the top of the airbag cover. I have never had reason to remove the instrument cluster cover but I know that only has screws, no tabs to deal with. Your best investment, and friend, is the factory service manual! ---------- John & Terry "His"-2002 Inferno Red Touring Edition "Hers"-2003 Electric Blue Limited Edition

you also have to disconnect negative battery cable and then wait about 5 minutes so airbag will not activate when taking apart.at least according to the haynes manual. just be careful. ron ---------- When people see a cat's litter box, they always ask, 'Oh, have you got a cat?' Out of curiosity, does the instrument panel stay in place, and can everything be basically "reassembled" minus the dash covers, so that the car can be driven while the panels are at the shop? I can see there being a slight safety issue with the airbags, but as I have no backup vehicle, I would still have to get to work. :) ---------- CreepyPT - Brian Kansas City, MO http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2477248 (Take a look, and rate my ride!)

Why don't you just reassemble the dash cover over? It's really easy to take apart, it will take you just few minutes to remove it when your air bag cover will be back. ----------

That's pretty much what I was asking. Can the dash be reassembled enough to drive it while the panels are out? For example, will the gauges be dangling about while I'm driving or are the held in other wise? Can the airbags be remounted and connected for safety? I'm in the process of getting the repair CDs from my stealer, but if he puts me off another week, I'll just grab em on ebay. ---------- CreepyPT - Brian Kansas City, MO http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2477248 (Take a look, and rate my ride!)

**SORRY THE PICS ARE SO BIG!** I'd run, not walk, away from that shop. You'll find someone better to work with! My husband & I painted my dash (& pretty much the rest of the interior). It holds paint fine when prepped properly (cleaning with degreaser like Joy/90%+ isopropyl alcohol). Mine's been done for years & still looks good, even as a DIY. Yes, you can drive with the car dissasembled, mine was driven 2 winters mostly torn apart inside. Here's a pic of mine with the parts out (I did not try to drive it without the passengers airbag, however. The car remained parked with the airbag out for safety reasons): Apart:

That's just brilliant looking! And I love when people photo document the work they have done! Thanks for the response, glad to know I get get it done myself or professionally and won't be without my Bella while it's being painted! ---------- CreepyPT - Brian Kansas City, MO http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2477248 (Take a look, and rate my ride!)
