Kleen Wheels Brake Dust Shields, yes or no?

I am thinking about brake dust and installing Kleen Wheels Brake Dust Shields on my 2004 PT Limited. Please reply wil your positive and negative experiences with Kleen Wheels. Is there any problem with excessive heat build up, possibly warping the rotors.? Did you install them yourself or did the dealer do it? Thanks ----------

i would strongly recommend them. i have them on all three of my cars and i love them. anyone with a jack and a lug wrench can install these in there own drive way. they do exactly what they are suppose to and keep the dust off of the wheels. ---------- When placing an order please reference Connor@X269 Thanks and have a great day, Connor Performance specialist 877-522-8473 X269 Connor@tirerack.com

I've heard that they can block the cooling of the rotors under heavy braking conditions, like driving in the mountains. I know Conner uses them on his cruisers, and they do keep the dust off. However, I must tell what I found last summer will on a Cruise along the Big Sur Coast. We (about 30 Pt's) had just cruised down the coast and were heading back. We stop for a "potting"break at the Big Sur Rest Area, and got out and chatted. While standing next to this PT <I had shorts>, I felt this tremous amount of heat coming from the front wheels. At first I thought it was the engine because of the heat, but it was the brakes and they had dust covers on it. I had to move away from the car it was so hot; I mean, I couldn't stand the pain of the heat. I know the rotors must have been glowing red under the dust covers. A bunch of went around and checked other cars and found nothing as hot. All of us concluded that it must have been the dust covers blocking the air. Now, trying to be fair, maybe this car had brake problems, I don't know. Since this was the only car with dust covers, and we had just been throw about an hour of heavy braking, this is the conclusion a bunch of us came to; maybe unfairly. Changing brake pads might be a better idea. I just bought some from Conner last week. ----------

IMHO there is a better way to get rid of the dust. I put Raybestos ceramic brake pads. I have very little dust and what little there is can be washed off with a hose.Another plus is the Cruiser stops better. ---------- Greg Gavencky The New Jersey Cruisers www.njcruisers.com

To me those shields make your alloys look like cheep iron rims with plastic covers on them. With all the cleaning stuff that's available are you really concerned about the brake dust? ---------- Electric Blue PT Cruiser GT 5-Speed

Well, I got the Kleen Wheels and installed them on all four wheels. They really do keep the dust off the rims. However, I had lots of difficulty keeping them quiet. They would pop, click and clink. Some wheels where worse than others. I was constantly removing my wheels to adjust them. Once I got the noisey wheel quiet, another one would get noisey. I had them on for three weeks, and gave them a valiant effort. I was disappointed about the noise, but really liked the look and being dust free. I know I had the correct size for my model PT. And I took great care during the installation. ----------

The easiest cure for the break dust issue is ceramic brake pads. There is so little break dust it can be easily cleaned of with a hose during weekly cleaning of the car.I have heard the biggest problem that has been reported with the dust shields has been excessive break noise to the point of being quite bothersome.I guess it is a personal choice for each owner, but I am very happy with the results of going ceramic pads all the way around......God Bless.......Mike ---------- Mike Casabianca His: 2001 Black LE with Auto Transmission, BullDog Signs Flames, WeatherTec wind deflectors, cargo area mat, PT trash can, PT valve stem caps and Dart's coldair intake, chrome tail and headlight bezels, chrome bumper inserts, chrome license plate pillow, chrome fender trim, 1940's retro chrome on front and back fenders, door spears, chrome hatch door trim, chrome gas door, brushed chrome door sills, billet door pins, custom "BlueHaze" dash mat, MRK Group lugnut covers, dome light trim, etc. and the chrome goes on...... I'm going with CruiserRN on this one too -- (Good Quality) ceramic pads are the answer. That ugly brake dust problem goes away, and the complaint of noise also goes away. I've got chrome rims, and it's nice to see them shine. Seems to me that those Dust Shields would also look fugly.

sfree8321, We have Kleen Wheels on both our PTs. The ones for the 2002 are nice and quiet and the 2003 has the same wheels as yours and they do tend to "click" from time to time. The edge of the Kleen Wheel should be rounded or rolled over for the 2003 wheels so the edge of the metal doesn't catch the wheel as it flexes. Still like them, the 2002 are painted to match and the 2003 are black. I have switched to ceramic pads and they make tire rotation a less messy job but I will keep the Kleen Wheels too. ---------- John & Terry "His"-2002 Inferno Red Touring Edition "Hers"-2003 Electric Blue Limited Edition

I had them on my cruiser for about a month ,then I tossed them. What junk. Go with the Ceramic brake pads and slotted rotors. You won't be sorry. I like them so much that I also had them installed on my 06 Convertible (pt) ---------- big jim

Ceramic pads are a good idea to really limit dust though slotted rotors tend to eat pads a bit faster. Keep in mind that DCX put cheap, thin rotors on the PT so the added heat from the Kleen Wheels will warp the rotors faster and the OEM rotors already warp faster without them. ---------- 2005 Stone White SRT4 2004 Graphite Auto
