Lifetime Warranty questions...

A couple weeks ago I bought a new PT, which is my first ever Chrysler product. Things that I have read on the internet about Chrysler's warranty/service are less than reassuring of my decision to buy this new car. I have little trust in dealerships anyway. Anyway, a few questions about the warranty... 1. From memory, it seems like the owner's manual claimed the timing belt is covered under the unlimited powertrain warranty. The owner's manual also suggests changing the belt at 120,000 miles. Who pays for the 120,000 mile scheduled maintenance of this belt? Me or Chrysler? 2. The vehicle needs to be inspected every 5 years, which is no problem. Are they going to inspect my vehicle and find several hundred (or thousand) dollars worth of repairs that I need to pay for to maintain my unlimited powertrain warranty. I want to avoid a situation like this... dealership - "well, a non-warranty part failed or wasn't working to specifications, which caused the warranty part to fail, therefore you are not covered." . ----------

I'd bet that you pay. It's scheduled maintenance. 2. Probably but let's hope not. ----------

I have only the factory warranty from Chrsler, 3/36 bumper to bumper and lifetime powertrain. I wonder if the lifetime warranty will help my trade-in value at the Chrysler dealer in 5 or 6 yeras? For example, suppose I tell them that I'm not interested in buying a new car at the price they want and I will keep my car forever because of the lifetime powertrain warranty. It seems like Chrysler would be money ahead by giving me a little more for trade-in simply to void the lifetime powertrain warranty. Although this makes no more money for the dealer... ----------

The life time warranty is for the orginal owner only and NOT transferable. So, it won't help at trade-in time ----------

Before we purchased my wife's 07 PT, I grilled the maintenance manager at the dealer about the lifetime warranty. I was satisfied with what I was told, and bought the 07, and am now considering replacing my 04 PT with an 08 PT to get the warranty for my car (I drive about 40,000 miles a year, so that is a big benefit). In any case, to answer your questions: 1. You are responsible for the proper maintenance of the vehicle. It was told to me that you would be responsible for any item in the maintenance schedule provided in the owner's manual. That would include replacing the timing belt. However, if the timing belt fails prior to the scheduled maintenance time, then Chrysler would repair it free of charge. As long as you use a MOPAR timing belt, the replacement belt would be covered until the next scheduled replacement interval. They will not cover non-MOPAR parts, which is understandable. Now something like the water pump, which is normally replaced at the same time as a timing belt, is covered under the lifetime warranty and is not part of the scheduled maintenance. Therefore whenever that fails, they fix it for free. One of the big benefits I saw is that many items are covered, including the half shafts and CV joints. Whenever a CV joint would go bad, Chrysler would repair it. 2. I asked specifically about this 5 year inspection. I was told it was a free inspection simply to check those items that are covered under warranty. Now they may highlight areas that need to be done as part of normal maintenance, but the main purpose of the inspection is to try to make a smaller warranty repair to avoid having to make a larger one later. I'm sure some dealers may try to take advantage of this, but if you have confidence in the dealer I think you'll be fine. My dealer (Starling Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Kissimmee, FL) is excellent. The first thing the maintenance manager told me was that if I only keep a car a few years, then don't let a lifetime warranty influence my decisions. however, if I put a lot of miles on a car and/or keep them a long time; then this warranty is well worth considering. Hope this helps. Doug ----------

the kicker here is who is actually going to keep their car for a life time? That is where Chrysler is banking on the buyer to not keep their car for too long. I on the other hand will be buying a 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T in White and cant wait to use the Lifetime Powertrain warranty in say 30yrs. that is an exception. ---------- 04 "SRT-4" PT Cruiser w/ AutoStick (in Sea Mist Green, 1 of 146) Stage 1, Mopar BOV, MagnaFlow exhaust, Mopar 7.5mm wires, Mopar-Bosch Plugs gapped at .035, Mopar air filter, unrestricted air box, H&R sport springs, Progress 27mm front sway bar, Energy Suspension motor mount inserts, 06' tail lights, 06' Hood emblem, T-handle on rear glass, SRT-4 badges, factory chrome accent group, chrome door cups, 8" Mopar sub, ArmourFend ClearBra.
