Manual Tranny Shift linkage question? Can't Post

I have one of the original '01 LTD 5sp with 75K great miles on it. It's been my daily driver for most of the year but in the winter months I stick with a AWD buggy.

This past weekend I pulled off my AirRaid box along with the K&N filter and the battery and battery tray for the purposes of installing a new batt and cleaning the Air Filter.

When I was ready to reinstall I noticed what appeared to be a cable end with connector simply laying on a stud from a bell crank type gizmo. This cable end looked like it should have a bushing in the center of it which would fit snugly onto the stud, but the inside of the cable end and the stud looked dirty-ish meaning that there was nothing there recently.

I pulled out my factory service manuals and although I could find diagrams about the linkage cable installation there was no mention of a bushing nor any clear pictorials. I was able to determine that of the two cables this is NOT the cross-over cable.

My question is this for anyone familiar with this part... does this cable simply just lay over the stud as I see it? Or is there supposed to be a bushing in that cable end?

If the latter then could someone PLEASE advise what the part no is for bushing so I could pick up the part and get my PT back together?

If the former then please acknowledge and I will happily reassemble and drive away.

Thanks for all the great advice this forum has provided over the years. I look forward to your responses.

Bob

What you need are called "Booger Bushings". Chrysler will sell you the whole shift linkages, but you only need the bushings (much much cheaper). Google, "Booger Bushings + PT Cruiser". Or go over to PTCrew and do a search for Booger Bushings. Also the Crew probably has a "how to" on replacing them.

Thanks a million, J.W.;

I've ordered a set of these from Howell Automotive and they're on their way. Based on the appearance of my cable end, this bushing must have been missing for quite some time. What I don't understand is why I didn't detect any issues while shifting.

I think I'll take a photo and post for anyone interested.

Thanks again.

Indeed, that is most puzzling to me too!

It would be great if you did. Better yet, wait to get the new parts and take a picture of them not installed, and installed. That would be great documentation on the forum. Bow

Having an 02 BE cruiser, I just had dealer change the lube in the stick shift. fluid and labor $70???
Anyway, seems like AFTER the change from the OE clear trans fluid, andputting the recommended
+4 red stuff, the shifting is not better but worse.

Reading bout the missing bushing or bushings, I would replace mine, but have no idea where the access is. Do you start at the inside at the floor mtd shift lever, or TRY to find the other end when underneath the car????

Feedback appreciated.

Later post on the front susp A arm bushings forthcoming .....

If you are talking about the same bushing mentioned in previous post, then it sounds like it at the top of the tranny as he said he was doing something with the air filter (??). In that case, pull out the air cleaner assembly and it should right under there.

What exactly is the tranny doing to make it worse?
