My PT Got Popped

I did not have a good Labor Day weekend. Friday night I was coming home on I-65. I was about a mile from my house. It was late and rainy. An SUV came onto the entrance ramp. I guess he decided he didn't want to go that way, so he turned around on the interstate. I had my cruise control on 60 mph when I saw his headlights. He realized he was going the wrong way, and he turned again. So he was taking up two lanes. If I had turned right, I would have slammed into other cars. We were on a bridge, so there was nowhere else to go. I slammed on my brakes, and because of the wet road, I slid right into him. The SUV left the scene. Luckily a college-age kid saw the whole thing happen. He called the police and stayed as a witness. I finally collected myself enough to pull over to the right. I still was not aware that the SUV had left. (I was a little out of it.) Long story short, Cruiser is badly hurt. Because it was a holiday wekeend, I couldn't get the police report, contact insurance, get it towed, etc. until this morning. I was hurt a little, but nothing is broken. At least it happened over a holiday weekend, so I could stay in bed and rest up. My right foot was injured (I had it on the brake hard, and I braced myself for the impact. So my foot took the worst of it.) It's bruised up and hurts. My chest is pretty badly bruised from the seatbelt. I was going to post pics, but ImageStation is closing, and now I don't know how to post pics. ----------

Hi Rhonda, As Frank would say "Holy Crap" (from Raymond). Glad you're not seriously hurt, but you've gotta be really sore. Hope they find the "drunk?" that did it. Saw the pic on E-mail, lucky you're not in the hospital. Get well soon. ---------- If it's gonna happen - it's gonna happen out there.

Sorry Hipcat, to hear your bad news. That is terrible. Hope they catch the person who injured you and your car. I hope you are OK as sometimes things get worse in this type of crash. I had a bad time as well yesterday as I was on the interstate in Omaha and the traffic was terrible, the drivers go at least 90 in a 65. I needed to lane change once I got into Iowa and could not get over, so I put my foot down and moved over to get in front of a barrelling semi, really cut him off. I was afraid I wouldn't make it for a minute but I did, got off and was so lost, finally found my Daughters new house. Get feeling better real soon and hope your car can be easily repaired. Hi HipCat, I am sooo sorry for you and your PT. All I can say is Thank God that you were not seriously hurt. I do not know what kind of stupid numskulls get on the wrong side of the interstate. My money is on the fact that they were drunk. To make things worse though is that they left the scene; ooooh man do I hate when those inconsiderate ..... people leave the scene. I sincerely hope that that idiot is caught and prosecuted to the max. Look on the bright side though, now you have a blank slate to rebuild your PT bigger and better. Hope you get better and good luck with whatever happens. ----------

Thank you for all your kind comments. That really means a lot to me. Leo, I think you're right—the guy was probably drunk, which would also explain why he left the scene. Garpike, you're right too—I didn't go to the doctor that night, but I did on Saturday. I was feeling so rough the day after! I'm healing up; just got the blues right now. PT Separation Anxiety. Still waiting to hear from the body shop on the estimate. Again, thank you for your encouragment and prayers. ----------

I can't even imagine how I would feel to walk out and see my car after it had been violated like that. Do you know what kind of a car hit you and what color etc. it was? Are there a lot of body shops in your area? I was just wondering. I had a friend one time who had a similar thing happened to him. He asked the body shops to let him know if a car came in like the one that hit him and told them the general damage that might be on the car. I will be darn if a shop didn't call him and sure enough it was the right car with his paint on it. He was able to scare the guy enough that the guy admitted it. Charlie ----------

So sorry your lovely PT got damaged Hipcat, but it's good to hear you're healing up. The more I drive around these days, the more irresponsible and reckless many other motorists appear. I dunno what the problem is. This past Labor Day weekend had a record number of accidents and fatalities in my area (Ontario, Canada). Mostly seemed like people just doing really dumb things. Folks yacking on cell phones, text messaging to whoever, playing with stuff in their vehicles, or under the influence of something. Hopefully, the bum who was responsible for your collision will get caught. Here's also hoping yourself and your wonderful Cruiser make a full recovery in the very near future. ----------

Nearly $7000! Wow, that sounds stiff. The damage in the pics isn't exactly the kind that can be "buffed out", but I'm very suspicious about how some body shops work... and calculate repair costs. Personal case in point-- In 1986, I was involved in a front-end collision. The car had plastic body panels. They flexed quite a bit, but popped back into shape. There was no internal damage visible to the chassis of the car and even tho it involved the front end, there was no radiator damage. The car was towed to the body shop, which was run by the local GM dealer (my car was a Pontiac). The repair estimate was around $2500, which the insurance covered. The dealership's shop claimed they replaced several of the plastic body panels. It was listed as such on the invoice. Once the car was ready, I had a close look at the repair job. It sure looked to me like they'd just done a half-assed repaint to the front of the car and not much else. But, I was just a kid who'd gotten into an accident, so what did I know? It was only much later on that I discovered how little had been done for all that money. The "new" body panels? Welllll, the car originally had a vinyl bra on the front, which was secured by little velco tabs just inside the wheel wells. Guess what was still attached to the "new" panels? Yup, those old velco pads... which had been oversprayed with paint. The auto collision/ insurance co. partnership is an unholy alliance. Both partners play each other like a fiddle and the consumer pays the price with inflated premiums. As long as the policy holders keep paying, nobody's too keen on looking for the fraud and corruption that's making some people wealthy. ----------

Well, I just talked to the insurance adjustor and cried and begged for my Cruiser. (I've been crying all afternoon.) He said that frankly, he was puzzled about what to do because of all the customization on it. I cried and begged some more and told him that a lot of that stuff wasn't even available any more, now that Moss quit doing CruiserBits. He said he would revisit the "total loss" issue with a supervisor and do all he could. I told him I didn't want the money or a new car—I want my baby back home.

HipCat I feel so sorry for you. I guess it has been about 18 yrs. ago my wife got hit by an uninsured motorist. We have insurance for that kind of insurance so our insurance company paid the bills. My wife had a Pontiac Bonneville at the time and it was about 11 years old. I keep my cars up and it was over insured for a car that old. The adjuster wanted to total it and I wanted it fixed. He told me he hated to get those cases when the car looks like new but it is to old to fix. I pleaded for him to reconsider. Him me and the auto shop manager had a meeting and of coarse the manager was on my side. The adjuster said OK you can repair it but the insurance company will not pay a penny over the quote. The shop manager was able to get some things from the wrecking yards and some things like the bumper could be straightened and re-chromed. Any way every thing turned out alright in the end. I hope everything will turn out the way you want it to. Like the adjuster told me, "the guys that sell us our insurance should keep us abreast of our coverage". I don't think that will happen because that is less money for them. Charlie ----------

Wow! It sounds like dejavu. About 3 weeks ago I was on the freeway and took exit leading to side road that leads San Francisco International Airport when a nut decided at the last minute to take the exit that was off of the side road and cut across traffic sideways. Others barely missed him. It was dark outside and his small Toyota truck was black, but because he was going sideways I did not see him until the last minute. I was going at least sixty when I hit him. Just got word last Friday that my car was totaled. I had an eye witness who pulled over and I called the Highway and they came to the scene. I had a 2001 silver Touring Edition, leather seats, chrome wheels and I had the under the seat storage drawer installed. I am devastated. ----------
