New '07 with issues

I have had my dream car since early Sept. 2007. Signature Series, auto transmission, brand new, sole owner. Lately, there are occasions where the car will rev over 4,000 RPM's pulling away from a stop light before it will shift to 2nd. It sometimes "bucks" and when it takes more than 2 seconds to start, I have the dreaded "check engine" light for a day and a half. Today it died in the bank drive-thru but started up again right away. Any idea if this is bad gas, or something more sinister? Thanks... Pat ----------

Sorry...not sure what you mean by that. Pat is short for Patricia, and I'm not a car-savvy female!! Where do I look for the code? Thanks....Pat ----------

The engine codes are a series of #'s that comes up from the car's computer that will tell you what is wrong when translated. They are easy to bring up but for the life of me can't recall the proceedure, guys please help me out here. The check engine light's main cause is a loose gas cap so I would first tighten the cap and run 6 driving cycles. If it is the cause the light will shut off.If you have a bit of a heavy foot it is easy to make the engine rev to 4000 RPM's before hitting 2nd gear.As for stalling and bucking bad gas is possible, but the OEM wires and plugs are absolute crap so it would serve you well in improved preformance as well as getting a true educated opinion from a qualified mechanic. My name is Michael and I am a Registered Professional Nurse,so my automotive skill is minimal except for what I learned in my 8 years of cruiser ownership and 7 years of PTCC membership.I hope I was of some help and there are some excellent and very knowledgeable PT people here so just ask and they will help you.Welcome and may God Bless You.............Mike ---------- Mike Casabianca His: 2001 Black LE with Auto Transmission, BullDog Signs Flames, WeatherTec wind deflectors, cargo area mat, PT trash can, PT valve stem caps and Dart's coldair intake, chrome tail and headlight bezels, chrome bumper inserts, chrome license plate pillow, chrome fender trim, 1940's retro chrome on front and back fenders, door spears, chrome hatch door trim, chrome gas door, brushed chrome door sills, billet door pins, custom "BlueHaze" dash mat, MRK Group lugnut covers, dome light trim, etc. and the chrome goes on...... Hers: 2003 Patriot Blue Woody with Automatic Transmission, Bulldog Signs Eeyore, Cargo area mat, WeatherTec wind deflectors, PT valve stem caps, PT trash can, "BlueHaze" custom dash mat, and chrome tailpipe extension, "Old School" wood shifter knob, wood and chrome door pins, MRK Group interior knob and switch covers, door surrounds, and dome light trim, chrome door surround trim, white eeyore window decals, smoothie hub cap, wood eeyore plaques ....and the Wood goes on http://community.webshots.com/user/mdcvmvc

Thanks...for the warm welcome AND the blessing...both are required and appreciated. You actually DID give me the answer I was looking for...whether to try just a different gasoline (I have used different brands, so that may NOT be the answer) or to take her in for an exam. I don't have a heavy foot on the gas pedal, so this revving over 4k thing was quite unnerving. The Cruiser is the first NEW car I have had in over 20 years, so was very disapppointed when I found myself back to wondering once again if my car would work on a given day. I have the opal finish, so the car looks either gray or "lavendar" depending on the sunlight. I love the car except for these problems (I could ALSO do with better gas mileage). Thanks again...Pat in NJ ----------

Pat, Be sure to take advantage of the warranty. If the car does not seem right (and it shouldn't be revving to 4000 RPMs) take it back to the dealer. I have an 04 and we liked it so much we bought my wife a new 07. Hers has been great with nothing like what you're mentioning. I do almost all of the work on our cars myself, but with the 07 if something at all goes wrong during the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty, its going back to the dealer. After that, I plan on taking full advantage of the lifetime warranty should something go wrong with the powertrain. You've really purchased an excellent car, and you certainly shouldn't be worrying about reliability. I have 106,000 miles on my PT and it has been great. You paid the extra money to get a brand new car so take advantage of the warranty that comes with it. Let us know how you make out. Doug ----------

Thanks....I'll make the call today. It was my non-mechanically-inclined hhusband who made the suggestion about the gas, while I KNEW in my heart of hearts it needed to go see the dealer...Pat ----------

Pat, I wanted to add some clarification/correction. I misread your first post and thought you said it revved to 4000 RPMs on its own. Once I re-read it, I agree with Mike; if you have a "heavy" foot, you could rev that high before shifting, but you really have to be pretty heavy on the pedal. Try accelerating lightly and see when it shifts to second. It should shift much sooner than 4000 RPM. A heavy foot would also lower your mileage. However if you accelerate the same all of the time and the 4000 RPM issue occurs only some of the time, than there is a problem. However, the stalling and the bucking are not normal and you should go back to the dealer. As far as mileage goes, I average about 27-28 MPG with a mix of highway and city driving. Strictly city driving gets me 22 - 24, and on a long trip, averaging about 70 MPH I get about 30, give or take a MPG. Hope this helps and sorry about the misunderstanding regarding the 4000 RPM issue. Doug ----------

No apology needed...the revving problem IS sporadic; the car usually shifts between 2 and 2 1/2 on the tachometer dial (don't really UNDERSTAND what it is; I only noticed it when it went out of control!) I do mostly "city" driving and have been getting only around 18MPG. A recent highway trip got me 27, and I was thrilled!! While I am not exactly a turtle, I do NOT like going too fast, so the heavy foot theory is not applicable...AND I don't like the fact that the car just shut off in line at the bank. SOOo..I am calling the dealer thisafternoon. Will let you know what the diagnosis is after I have it looked at. THANKS for all your replies...much appreciated. Pat ----------

Since the revving problem is sporadic and apparently very noticeable, be sure to mention that to the dealer as well as the stalling and bucking. If your city driving involves a lot of stop lights and sitting in traffic, then 18MPG may be about right. But if the problems you've encountered are fixed, hopefully you'll begin to see some improvement. Doug ----------

Your car is a 2007...so it's still under warranty...isn't it?! Don't bother with this issue and go to your dealer. I'm just wondering why you're trying to solve this by yourself... ----------

I wasn't trying to SOLVE the issue by myself...my husband had suggested it all might stem from a tank of bad gasoline, and I was posting here to see if someone with more experience than HE has would back HIS opinion or MINE...which was to go to the dealer. I now have an appointment on this coming Tuesday, so all will be rectified...I hope...And thanks again, one and all. I shall post the final outcome sometime Tuesday or Wednesday....PS: all was well today! Pat ----------

The results are in: It was a sensor that senses the throttle position, or something like that. He said that was the cause of ALL the various troubles. I actually listed everything in the computer, and just handed him the printout. Far easier than trying to tell him everything standing there! The paper I got from the service guy says "sensor, throttle position/module - replace" then under that: "replace TPS intermitting open circuit." Whatever it was, it was under the warranty.
