My wife lost her keys. I have a remote and a blank key on there way to me that I got off of Ebay. How do I program the new remote? Can a lock smith cut the new key for me and program the new key? Charlie ----------

I don't know on the pre 2006 models, but I believe my user manual mentions a way to program the remotes. You have to have an existing key to do it. I'm in Kansas City, MO right now, so I'll check the manual when I get home and let you know. I think a dealer has to do the key for you, if I'm not mistaken. I think it gets programmed to the specific car. Good luck. Sorry I wasn't more helpful, Ray ----------

Hi Charlie, hope all is well. I agree with Retro as I wanted a second key and was told I had to have it programmed at the dealer. cost- $160.00 so I just had one made to open my door. I have a 2001 I just purchased last November. It came with one sentry key only. I found some remotes for an '01 LE on Ebay. When I went to program them per the instructions in my owners manual, they would not program. Later I was at a local hardware store where they make keys and had a reader/programmer. They would charge me $80 to make me a spare sentry key. But since his machine wasn't reading any code in my key, he couldn't. I ended up just getting a key to open the doors with. Since then I've talked to a local dealer. They tell me you need two good keys to program the remotes, or they will program all I have for a flat fee of $40. One of these days I'll take her to the dealer for another key and get the remotes programmed but for now I can live with things as they are. ---------- New owner 2001 Limited Edition. Hi Charkie, I have a 2007 I bought used a year ago yesterday! It only came with one key and I had to buy the second key and have it programmed at the dealer. The manual said it can be done with two valid sentry keys, but the dealer insisted it could not and I only had one anyway. Key and programming was just under $200 (4 times what I paid for my first car in 1973!). If you have two good keys, I would try to programming instructions in the owners manual. If the instructions for the 2007 would work, let me know and I'll scan them for you. Terry ---------- Living Happily Ever After, Now and Then in Millbrook, AL.

I have looked in the service manual and yes if you already have two keys you can program the third key. The problem is we each had a key and since my wife lost hers I am out of luck on that front. I now have a blank and am going down to a lock smith tomorrow with the car and see what he can do for me. I suppose I will end up at the dealer and have them program the key and be done with it. By the way I called the dealer and talked to the parts guy. He said they wanted $51.00 for a key. I got one off of Ebay for $8.00 and change plus $7.00 shipping. I also got a remote off of Ebay. I just got back from the hardware store. I was told that they can make me a key for my '05 GT for $29.00, which includes the programming. Unfortunately, the key guy wasn't there, so I'll be going back later in the week. ----------

Boy what a range of prices. I went by a lock smith Monday and they cut the key I had for $2.00. They told me if I got the pin number from the dealer they would program it for $41.00. I went by the dealer today for service and picked up a new remote for $51.00. I asked them to program the remote and the key. They programmed the key at no charge plus they programmed the remote fob at no charge. Go figure, Charlie ----------

I've got a Old Timer '01, and I've never lost my key or fob. But for some reason BOTH of mine quit working last summer, after I left them with the valet at the airport and another time when a guy came and got my car to wash it for me. Both times, I changed the batteries and tried to reprogram them, as per the manual instructions. Neither time worked for me, after trying several attempts. So I resorted to taking them to our only dealer and they reprogrammed them for me, for $39 each time. I "think" they quit working because I was working, and wearing my keys on a lanyard around my neck, along with my cell phone. No one has confirmed it, but when I quit doing that, they stopped quitting on me. Maybe something to do with the phone going off, in close proximity to the fob? At any rate, I still have a dummy key for emergencies too.... ----------

I'm going through this same situation right now. My 05 Convertible only came with one key and one remote. I called the local dealer to get a quote and they wanted $61 for a key and $49 to program. I bought two keys online for $27 bucks including shipping. So once I get them in the mail I'll look into getting them cut and/or programmed at a locksmith before paying the $50 for programming at the dealer. What a raping that crap is. What does it take, 5-10 minutes tops and they want nearly what an hour of mechanics labor costs!! ----------

When I called the parts department they told me the key would be $61.00 including programming it. He said they would charge me $47.00 if I brought in a key from somewhere else. The key shop said they would program the key for $42.00 but I would have to get the pin number from the dealer. The dealer programmed the remote fob and key before I knew it. It is definitely a rip off. I am going to get a third key from Ebay for both of our cars and then I can program the third key myself in case we lose a key again. Charlie ----------

I purchased two new transponder keys off ebay for $27 including shipping. I called around to a few places and ended up going to the dealer. They cut the keys for free and charged $45 for the programming. I tried to call a few local locksmiths and the only "programming" that they want to do, is the type that we can do at home when we have 2 original keys and want to add an extra. When I told them I only had one key, he started talking about having to have the car's computer reprogrammed which would mean that I would need all new keys done and blah blah blah "something like $450 for that to be done". I said, ok thank you and hung up. Dumb Ass! So the dealer did want $62 per key which was ridiculous, but the $45 for programming isn't too terrible. If there's anyone in the Northern Virginia area, it was the Cowles Chrysler off of Route 1 in Woodbridge that did the programming for me. ----------
