Press Release Source: DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.
Chrysler Group To Offer Diesel-Powered Jeep(R) Liberty for North American Market Monday November 25, 3:22 pm ET
NEW YORK, Nov. 25 /CNW/ - To encourage North American acceptance of diesel-powered vehicles, DaimlerChrysler will test the U.S. and Canadian markets with a diesel-powered Jeep(R) Liberty beginning in 2004, Dieter Zetsche, President and C.E.O. of the Chrysler Group announced at a DaimlerChrysler Symposium on Innovation here today. "The best way to show our confidence in diesel technology is to bring a modern, clean diesel passenger vehicle to market, which we intend to do," Zetsche said. "We would like to see the oil refiners commit to producing and distributing high quality, low-sulfur fuel as soon as possible."
While DaimlerChrysler offers a range of diesel-powered passenger vehicles in Europe, where approximately 35 percent of vehicles are powered by diesel engines, the Jeep Liberty will be the first light-duty sport-utility vehicle with a diesel powertrain to go on sale in the United States and Canada.
"Today's modern diesel vehicles should be part of the solution to improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions," Zetsche said. "Diesels lead to an average of up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions an average of 20 percent.
"While there are legitimate concerns about the particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) exhaust from diesels, the introduction of high quality, low-sulfur diesel fuel will enable a reduction of these emissions," added Zetsche.
The diesel Jeep Liberty will be powered by a 2.8-litre common rail turbo- diesel engine produced by DaimlerChrysler, with either a manual or automatic transmission. It is expected that the diesel-powered Liberty will have up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, versus a comparable gasoline-powered Liberty.
DaimlerChrysler currently offers diesel engines in its Dodge Ram heavy- duty trucks in North America. Approximately 75 percent of all Dodge Ram 2500/3500s sold in North America are powered by diesel engines.
Outside the U.S. and Canada, the Chrysler Group currently offers diesel powertrain options in the Jeep Cherokee (Liberty in North America), Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chrysler Voyager minivans. In Western Europe, diesel-powered vehicles comprise 56 percent of Chrysler Group's total sales volume. Jeep Cherokee vehicles with diesel powertrains currently account for 65 percent of that model's total sales in Western Europe.

Hi My PT cruiser is the CRD limited edition 2.2Turbo diesel uk spec. Which has loads of bottom end torque and cruises at 80+ and sounds as quiet as a petrol. I think the engine is the same as in the Mercedes Benz VITO van????? There is a chip upgrade that changes the BHP output from 121 to 151. The mpg is between 38-44 which is better than 20- 24ish with your 2.4 Turbo. Acceleration is quite brisk but the mid range is very impressive. So dont slag it off before you`ve driven one( you MIGHT be impressed) One suprise for me was the lack of the smell of diesel except when at the filling station. Have a word with a few more UK CRD owners I bet a few Americans will buy the new diesel Jaguar???huh huh huh its not the engine that makes a PT Cruiser,it the way it looks "KOOL" ---------- Pt driving is the way to go

I have recently returned to the US from Germany. I resided there for 13 years. Since the introduction of Common Rail Injection about 4 to 5 yrs ago the odor and noise normally produced by diesel engines has been drastically reduced. With the 3rd generation it is almost impossible to hear the engine. I have recently purchased a 2002 PT Cruiser Limited Edition with the gasoline engine. My brother (he resides in Germany) has the european version with the 2.0 liter motor. He has installed a camshaft and tuned exhaust from Chrysler. That bumps his HP up to approx. 168 HP. I have driven it and it is somewhat more responsive, although it doesn't really get going until 4500 rpm. I don't think diesels will ever be popular here in the USA. First of all it is hard to find diesel at a normal gas station, and the americans aren't that concerned with fuel economy. I had a Mercedes A-160 CDI while in Germany and achieved a constant 48 mpg at a fairly constant 75 miles per hour (125 kmh). My US PT averages around 20-22 in combined driving mpg. Concerning chip tuning, the largest gain is in your torque. I was always happy with my Diesel. It just wasn't feasible to Import it into the US because the A Class is not an Export vehicle. ----------

I would say no for now. I read somewhere that we will get "clean" diesel fuel in the US around 2006. Once that happens then yes we will see diesels offered here. ---------- Richard Westcott Idaho/Montana Director Meridian, ID Red, 2006 GT Mods: Fuzzy Dice. Presto Change-o third brake light mask.
