Well, I did it. Changed to NGK plugs, Magnecor 8.5 wires and a K&N 63 Series air charger/cold air intake. I cannot believe the difference in performance. I thought there might be subtle changes but, boy, was I pleasantly surprised. The shake/shudder while idling is gone. The car is more responsive. My husband rode with me on some errands today after he changed everything out (I sure am glad he is mechanically inclined), and when he asked why I turned the radio off (I had the top down), I said, "To hear it when I get on it!! Should have made the changes sooner. Hmmmm, what to change next. . . . . ----------

FINALLY, a post in the Turbo threads. I was beginning to think they were locked. Which NGK plugs did you use and how are they gapped? Where did you get the Magnecor wires? I installed the K&N 33-2153 stock filter replacement a couple of days ago. I plan on the plugs and wires next. I will have to order the wires. NGK Iridiums are available locally, but if I have to pay shipping on the wires, I can probably get a better price on the plugs by ordering both together. If the iridiums are not the way to go with the turbo and Stage 1, someone let me know what is best. I would like to get these ordered soon so that I can install them the next sub-95° day that I am not working. Scott ---------- I'm at that awkward age. I ask for the senior discount at restaurants, but my PT still has Stage 1 and dual 10" subwoofers.

I used the NGK platinum plugs, gapped at .040. I know a lot of people have posted not to use platinum but well - we'll just have to wait and see. The magnecor plug wire set was ordered from UltraRev.com. ----------

Sorry to say I have to agree with MeanGreen here. Why should we bother to post advice about parts if others are just going to dismiss the advice and go counter to it? If you are running so hot that the platinum plugs are melting, isn't there a probability that the engine is running too lean? ----------

OK, when you say the platinum plugs "melt", what exactly do you mean - the electrode? What part of the plug is "melting"? I realize people have posted that platinums are a no-no, but who has experienced this firsthand? Does anyone have a photo of a "melted" platinum plug? I just ask because I definitely do not want to do anything that will damage my car. I want to obtain the best performance like everyone else. So far, my car is running great with the platinum plugs. If this is causing damage, what are the telltale signs? Is this something that will happen gradually over time or all at once? I have not noticed any ping/pre-ignition, and the car runs so much better with the new plugs, wires and K&N aircharger. I did not ask anyone's "advice" when I posted about the changes on my car - I simply stated what mods I had done. Aren't platinum plugs better than OEM plugs? If the factory plugs didn't "melt", then why would the platinums? ----------

The platinum on the plugs will start melting and your car will start running like crappola. I had a modified 280 hp '03 GT that I used the OEM Copper Plus plugs in gapped at .040. The car ate V8s for lunch. I currently have a modified 315 hp '05 SRT-4 with OEM Copper Plus plugs gapped at .035. Not much on the road will come close to my car. We're not trying to argue with you. Both Mike and I come from ptcrew.com where there are lots of gearheads running from stock to 600 hp PT turbos. Not one are running with platinum plugs because they know not to. It's your car, do what you want. ---------- 2005 Stone White SRT4 2004 Graphite Auto

As found in THIS thread regarding plug usage on the PT Turbo engine: Quote: These were recommended by the guys at the Mopar Performance Hotline at 888-528-HEMI (4364) and they are the ones that told me not to use platinum plugs as the bonding metal that bonds the platinum tip to the electrode will melt and the tip will come loose and be sucked into the engine, our PT Turbo engines run around 1800 degrees in the combustion chamber, most other engines do not run this hot, so they can use platinum plugs, but not our turbos.
When the Mopar Performance Engineers talk, we all should listen. ---------- '04 Limited Edition Platinum Series Turbo Lite + Stage 1 + VAK intake + Magnecor wires = 14.48 @ 95mph Pix here

I would consider Stage1 next. About $50 less than the exhaust system, easier install, and a big dose of instant gratification. Note that Stage1 does require the use of 93 octane gas. ---------- I'm at that awkward age. I ask for the senior discount at restaurants, but my PT still has Stage 1 and dual 10" subwoofers.

Wow! Deja vu all over again! About 2 years ago I went out and bought NGK (platinum) plugs for my '04 GT and then got hold of all the words of wisdom about the melting problem. I hadn't installed them yet and, to be more safe than sorry, I bought the Iridiums and have had them installed since. I also installed the 10mm Magnecors and did the Stage 1 and the Hurst shifter all at the same time. It was like a different car after all those mods! You won't have any problems with the Iridiums, but try and get Stage 1 in there! ---------- 2004 Black GT 5-Speed, Stage 1, Hurst Short Throw Shifter, Booger Bushings, 10mm Magnecor Wires, Iridium Plugs, Sun Hyper Ground System, Screamin' Demon Coil, Chrome Accent Group, Chrome Door Handle Scuffs, Fire Engine Red Brake Calipers, Blane Hood Lift Kit, Chrome Engine Caps, 8-Ball Shift Knob, 8-Ball Valve Stem Caps, 8-Ball Door Lock Pulls, Fuzzy 8-Balls on Rear View Mirror, Joe Boxer 8-Ball Floor Mats, Beltronics RX65 Radar Detector, Airaid Cold Air Intake, AMX1397 Turbo "Up Pipe", Mopar Blow Off Valve, Chrome AooGah Horn, Dual Aeroforce Interceptor Gauges.

My husband installed the iridiums. Had to drive to a business meeting at my work's home office (225 interstate miles round trip). Got 25 mpg. This was running 80 MPH with cruise control on the interstate using 93 Octane. (Had been getting about 22 - 23 mpg before I made the mods for this same trip in the past - going 80 mph.) (Most of the gas stations in my area do not offer 91 - only 93 - so that is what I have always been using in it.) So - looks like making those mods with the plugs, wires and aircharger might be making a difference. I can definitely tell a difference in the performance. ----------
