Noise after having brakes done? Can't Post

We just replaced the front brake pads on my 04 PT. Now there is an odd sound coming from the left front tire, it goes away when we apply the brakes. Almost a light knocking sound, we thought it was a loose tire or calibar, but after taking everything apart again and putting it back together the noise is still there. Any suggestions?

It's likely to be the newly installed brake pads that are loose in their place.

The metal shims that mount to the caliper and put pressure on the pads to keep them in place may not have been installed properly (or not installed at all) when they put everything back together, or they may have gotten old and lost their "springiness."

I also like to spray the backs of the pads with brake quiet, which is some sticky stuff designed specifically to make the pads stick in their place and not vibrate or move about.

Re: [rsobhian] Noise after having brakes done? Can't Post

There were no shims or clamps with the old pads, they were factory. I bought the car just short of a year ago, it has 54,000 miles on it, I'm amazed that the brakes worked at all. I just went and bought new rotors, the old ones are about wore out, hopefully this will fix it. I'm not looking forward to pushing that piston on the caliber back again, but at least I was able to get a C clamp today from Auto Zone. Is there a place I can buy the shims or clamps from, Auto Zone didn't have any at all. The mechanic there has an 05 PT and he said he didn't think he's front brakes had anything either, but it's a Turbo and mine's not.

Thank you so much for your help. Cheers

*update*
Okay new rotors are on. It looks like the old rotor was so worn on the drivers side, the caliber wasn't tight enough, causing the caliber to rub on the tire well. Now there's no noise at all. Horray!

If you buy Quality pads (I use VGX in my shop) the shims are bonded to the pads. If you use those cheap stick on shims they will slide out of place and make even more noise.

oh, well then the shims were attached to the pads. I haven't had any problems since putting the rotors on. Just changed the plugs and wires and put in a new air filter. She's a very happy car now.

Glad to hear that. But for future reference VGX is the best pad for quiet brakes.

True that the PT pads have little spring clips bonded to them which are also meant to help keep them in their place (marked 1 in the pic and I think there are other ones not seen in the pic that clip inside the caliper piston). I had taken it for granted that all PT pads came with those spring clips, however, and did not think they made pads for the PT without those spring clips.

The shims I was talking about though clip to the caliper mounting adapter (marked 4 in the pic) and are marked 5 ("abutment shims") in the picture below.

Sorry about the poor quality of the picture.

Re: [rsobhian] Noise after having brakes done? Can't Post

My pads had the spring clips (1) but not the others (5). The pads did have a metal piece (shim?) that was adhered to the pad, but most if not all pads have those right? This was actually my first brake job that I did on my own and not being the "hand me the tool" person. LOL

Not all cars' pads are designed with spring clips attached, but PTC's are. That is why I would be surprised if they actually made pads for the PTC that did not have them.

As for the shims, my guess is that you have (had) them, but they're easy to miss - especially with all the brake dust covering them. If you used a brush... to get the dust off of the various parts they may have come off. They typically stay on the mounting adapter when you take the pads off, but sometimes they pop off.

Unfortunately, if they're missing, i'm pretty sure you would only be able to get them from chrysler.
