OEM Service Manual

Hi again folks, As per previous post I am the guy who bought the 2002 cruiser with 1200 miles on it. My wife loves it. I just gave it the first oil change at 3500 miles. I put in synthetic 5W-30 and a mobil 1 filter. Two questions if I may. I have already obtained an OEM service manual. It is about two inches thick. However, I have seen advertisments for three other OEM manuals that cover powertrain, Chasis diagnostic, and tranny http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-PT-Cruiser-Factory-Diagnostic-Service-Manual-Set_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34217QQihZ004QQitemZ140221656655QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW . Are these additional info or just same info I have in smaller books? Final quiestion How come the back of the car always gets dirty? I have the little spoiler thing on the roof. Do they all do this? Maybe it is the plastic air deflector by the sunroof? ----------

They all get dirty. The air deflector does not cause it and the spoiler does nothing to prevent it from happening. The PT has a rear wiper because the rear is flat. If you have noticed sedan's do not have the wiper and there rear window doesn't need it because of the trunk overhang but even sedan's get dirty on the lower trunk lid. ----------

The back of the cruiser gets so dirty because of a vaccuum that is created behind the vehicle as it moves. Instead of particles (water and dirt) just blowing by, they get sucked into the area behind the vehicle and yes, land on the back of it. You can see the same effect on semi trucks. The fact is though that all cars have this effect to varying degrees depending on the size. That is why you see cars drafting in racing (even bicycle racing). Hope that helps clear the mud a bit. ---------- DC1 #1610--5-speed. Its got some stuff. '03 Inferno Red--Its getting some stuff too!

Did you get your manual from Chrysler? The manuals I bought from Chrysler for my 04 are 3 volumes, plus an optional fourth volume of wiring diagrams. ----------

I purchased my OEM service manual from an on-line vendor. Like I said, it's about 2 inches thick. I have seen the other, smaller manuals and was wondering if they had more or different info, or were just "bite size" versions of what I have. I am a tech type guy and like to have all my info ready to go in case of a failure. I guess the back of her car is just going to have to be washed and waxed more often. hmmmmm, maybe if I add some fins from a 63 caddy? ----------

I purchased a DVD for $50 on ebay. It is an unblieveably detailed and complete set of manuals that covers four years.. I am a retired Service Center owner. This DVD is the most comprehensive manuals I have ever seen. ----------

The general service manual and CD do not contain the diagnostic code and pinpoint tests. You will need a Chrysler DRB-III scanner or equivilent to utilize the diagnostic books. ( I have both the manuals for 01-04 and a DRB-III scanner ) ----------

Are the codes that can be displayed at the odometer the same as the DRB-III scanner? Wouldn't an OBD-II work? So it sounds like I do want to obtain the additional three manuals. ----------

OBD-II only gives generic engine codes. Try to diagnose transmission, ABS, Airbag, Body control, Anti-Theft, Keyless entry, etc.... That's why a DRB-III is $6000 and a generic code reader is $50. ----------

Back in the 90's I had a 4Runner much like the one below:
That vertical spoiler on the back of it did a remarkable job of keeping that back window clean. It catches the high-pressure air flowing over the roof of the car and diverts a bit of it down the back of car. The resulting high-pressure jet stream going down the back of the car significantly reduces the opportunity mud and dust particles would have to stick to the back of the car - great thinking The cost is of course a little extra drag, but if it's mounted on an SUV the overall difference is probably not that great. In any case, I like the smooth back of the PT without the spoiler, but if I were to put a spoiler up there, I would look into something custom made that follows the contour of the top of the liftgate and provides this functionality. There's a product waiting to be made for the PT... just send me my royalty check... ---------- 2001 silver Limited-Touring (leather/suede, 4W disk, traction, heated mirrors & all :-) Mods: Tokico HP all around / Energy Suspension Master Kit / K&N drop-in / R1 Concepts drilled & slotte disks all around / Enkei RPF1 16x7 wheels & Conti Extreme Contact rubber / Prestige APS620 remote starter

Funny you should bring that up. I had a van years ago that I put a real wind deflector on. It actually created a channel for air to go through and did 2 things. It did as you described; blew air down the back window helping to keep it clean, and then it disrupted the vaccuum pocket and actually gave a slight increase in fuel mileage. I think that should go in the "Where are they now" column. ---------- DC1 #1610--5-speed. Its got some stuff. '03 Inferno Red--Its getting some stuff too!
