Oil in Spark Plug cylinders Can't Post

I have an '04 with about 90k on it (turbo model). I started experiencing some rough idle the other day (not the typical rough idle PT's experience), which eventually led to the service engine light coming on. After having Advance Auto check it, the codes came back "misfire in Cylinder #1 and Random Misfires". I thought it was probably the stock wires I still had in the car. When I pulled the wire out, it had oil all over it where it connects to the plug, as well as all of the other wires, hence the misfiring. I first thought I must have bad rings, but spoke to a friend that said the oil probably ran down onto the threads as I was pulling them out. Meaning, the oil was coming from above the plugs. I eventually came to the conclusion that the gaskets around the spark plug wells, between the valve cover and the head must be bad. I pulled the valve cover and replaced the gaskets around the spark plug wells and valve cover perimeter (came as a kit). They didn't appear that bad, but i replaced them anyway. Drove car, seemed ok, but light didn't go off. Drove car a few hours later, light still on and seems to be skiiping again when sitting still. I pulled spark plug wire to see if any oil, but none found. Any ideas? Could the misfiring cause damage to the coil pack?

On the valve cover of the turbo engine there are seals on the cover around the plug holes. It sounds like they are leaking.

I hope that's all it is. that's what i replaced, as well as the gasket that goes around the perimeter of the valve cover. I guess i'll see after a few more drives. The engine light hasn't gone away yet which makes me wonder if there is still more problems.

Disconnect the battery for a minute and hook it back up and see if the light comes back on. If it does than there mite be something more wrong.

SHOs are famous for this kind of leak. As long as the car is not misfiring, it will take a few days for the light to go off. After a code like this is set the PCM won't clear it until you go through a few complete warm up and cool down drive cycles. You may have also damaged the wires with oil and that maybe causing an erratic miss.

Hope your right. I did replace the wires. In fact, that's what I was originally doing when I discovered the oil on the wire ends. I knew something wasn't right then. Just got back from another trip to the store and the rough idle when stopped, seemed to have subsided.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes hook it back up. This is called resetting the computer. This resets the CEL. If there is still a problem the CEL will come back on.
