PT Cruiser Power Steering Hose Safety Recall

New PT Cruiser Safety Recall Chrysler today announced a recall of 438,000 plus model year 2001 to 2005 PT Cruisers for possible underhood engine fires caused apparently by the rubbing of a power steering hose on the transmission housing. Nine reported fires with no injuries have occurred due to this problem so they have initiated this recall. It appears only automatic transmission, non-turbo PT Cruisers are involved. Recalls are service procedures that Chrysler Service Technicians perform when required by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The factory always pays for the repair required by a recall. Owners of recalled vehicles usually receive a notice in the mail instructing them to visit the dealer for the repair. The dealer service dept will have to check your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for eligibility before proceeding with the repairs. The public usually learns about recalls before the dealers receive the paperwork and parts to do the repairs. This is because the NHTSA usually alerts the media of a new recall before the parts and repair instructions can be distributed to all the dealers. If you suspect there may be a recall on your car, ask the dealer service department to input your VIN into the computer for verification that a recall applies and has not already been completed. NHTSA makes available an online lookup for Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ Here are the details of this recall as available from the NHTSA: Recall date : Jun 02, 2004 Make : Chrysler Model : PT Cruiser Year : 2001-2005 Potential number of units affected : 438,391 NHTSA campaign ID number : 04V268000 Daimlerchrysler recall number: D18 Component: Steering: hydraulic power assist:hose, piping, and connections Summary: On certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.4l Non-turbo engines and automatic transaxles. Routing variation in the high pressure power steering hose could allow contact with the automatic transaxle differential cover, potentially damaging the hose. Consequence: Power steering fluid leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in an underhood fire. Remedy: Dealers will inspect and relocate, or replace as necessary, the power steering hose and confirm torque of the hose fastener at the steering gear end. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners should contact Daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1408. Customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236). ### ### PT Cruiser Technical FAQ http://www.ptcruiserclub.org/...nly/techtips/faq.htm Search the PT Cruiser Club Knowledge Base: http://www.ptcruiserclub.org/...al/search/search.cgi Sincerely, Mike Challis - PTCC Founder Copyright 2004 - PT Cruiser Club. I just received my notice yesterday (Sept. 27, 2004). I made an appointment to take my Cruiser in on Friday. They only had one hose in stock! So I suggest making a call before showing up. ----------

I've contacted 2 dealers, both of whom say there's no recall. I e-mailed DC, including the NHTSA numbers, and received this response. Dear Joe: Thanks for the email regarding recalls affecting your 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Once a determination has been made by DaimlerChrysler that a safety recall is necessary, to correct a problem with one of our products, a report is sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to advise them of the issue. Since this typically occurs in the early stages of the overall recall process, the vehicles involved and the repair procedure have not been finalized. Further, the necessary repair parts need to be manufactured and distributed to our Dealers. When all of this is accomplished, the recall is "launched". At that time, involved vehicles are loaded into the computer and our Dealers and customers are sent recall notification letters. The involved vehicle information for a recall is not available until the recall is launched. Therefore, the information you are seeking is not yet available. If your vehicle is involved in a recall, you will be notified by mail. If the number of recalled vehicles is substantial, often a phased launch is conducted and notices are sent out over a period of time. If you are experiencing any problems with an issue you feel may be related to this recall, we would certainly recommend that you contact your local dealer to arrange an appointment so that they can inspect the vehicle and determine the appropriate course of action. If you have further questions, please feel free to call us at 800-992-1997. Thank you for your email. Based on others' experiences, I'm guessing we are in the first stages of the recall. Some of us receiving notices- some not, some dealers not yet aware. I'm thinking that in a couple of weeks it will all work out. ---------- Joe and Teresa HIS: '04 Inferno Red, 16" Chrome Smoothies, 225/50R16 Toyo tires, horizontal billet grill, Eibach lowering springs (1.5 and 2.0) and anti-roll bars, MagnaFlow dual exhaust, Screamin' Deamon coil, Live Wires, polished cone intake, billet antenna, billet fuel door, polished vent knobs, polished stainless rear hatch struts.
