thanks for the reply

my mechanic has now tried three different cam shaft sensors. the car runs fine for a little while, then the engine light comes back on. when you get on the gas a little bit, the car feels like its going to stall. it runs "fine" if you are easy with it, but thats scary as hell when you are trying to merge onto the parkway

next try is a sensor ordered from a dealer.

the car has 57,000 miles on it...i figured it would be at least twice that before it started to fall apart on me.....

I wonder if there is something else going on causing the sensors to fail?

Have an '03 GT. Just rolled over 80K and I get P0340, P0344, P0441, and an old P0325 that's been there for awhile. Not used to all these codes coming at the same time, but if I don't push the gas too hard, the car runs fine. Step on it and bucks and stutters and generally goes crazy. I can't believe that they put lousy sensors in there purposely, but what else could it be?

I had a similar problem when I had my Dodge Stratus. Turns out the cam position sensor was fine. The wiring to the sensor wore through the insulation, near the connector. When I would accelerate, the slight shifting of the engine would cause the wires to short, and then the engine would cough and sputter like described. Eventually the wires would separate and then I'd be fine.

My Check Engine Light (CEL) is on sometimes and off sometimes. Sometimes when it is on the engine is fine. Other times it cuts back at 2500 rpm which I am sure is a computer function. Sometimes restarting the engine clears the cutback problem. The P 0340 code leads me to believe that I may have a timing problem or perhaps the cam sensor or its wiring is defective.

When the engine is stone cold it starts on the first turn with or without a CEL. After running for about fifteen minutes the CEL is likely to come on if it was not on from the start. Hot starts may be good or take ten seconds of cranking.

I burn 91 octane as sold in CA in the winter. I have an idea it cuts back on pollution per gallon by about 10% and burns 20% more per mile. Someone please tell me I am wrong.

Re: [bobfuses] P 0344 Error Code in 2004 Touring Edition Can't Post

I'm the guy with the '03 GT from the Dec '07 posting above. I finally gave in and took my car to the dealer to explore all the codes. The P0325 is still there, and has been there for over three years. I've heard usually this is a slipped manifold gasket, but hell, I'm trading the car in next weekend anyway, so I'm not going to worry about it. The P340 was fixed by replacement and the mechanic also wrapped up the wiring a little tighter to keep it from doing that again. It sure is nice to nail it on a freeway onramp or someplace where I won't get into trouble. It was one hour labor and about $70.00 for the sensor.
I wish you all good luck with your respective PTs. I've had a blast with mine since '03 and it has made me feel a little more confident about jumping on the automotive revolutionary wagon for a short while.

Hey, GT Bruiser...Take care up there in the wild, wild north! Thanks for all your worthwhile input.Wave

Well, good news for me. My mechanic replaced the Cam Position Sensor and cleared codes for $142.50, which included $53.10 for #5093508-AA Sensor.

I have my fun car back!
