Parked in the sun: top up or top down Can't Post

This question has to do with what will deteriorate in the sun faster: the convertible top or the leather interior.

When I don't expect it to rain, I have been leaving my top down with the interior exposed to the sun for 4 to 6 hours at a time. I also keep it down in the garage at night.

What are the pros and cons of doing this?

Pros:

Top will last longer
Interior will not get as hot
Top mechanism will not be used as much

Cons:

Leather may dry out faster (will more frequent use of a leather cream help?)
Vinyl parts may fade or crack sooner.

What are your thoughts on these options? Is it better to leave the top up when parked in the sun?

My thoughts are a new top is probably cheaper than a new interior. Plus, I put top protectant on my top and it's supposed to keep UV rays from damaging it. We'll see. So far the top seems nice and black, no fading and it's a 2005. The keeping the interior cooler is a good point, although as soon as I drop the top and get moving it cools down real fast.

Hmmm, what have I forgotten???

I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND IT HAS ALREADY BEEN IN THE HIGH 80S TO LOW 90S FOR A COUPLE MONTHS NOW. i KEEP THE TOP UP WHILE AT WORK. i HAVE CLOTH SEATS IN MINE BUT I DO KEEP THE DASH COVERED AND A SCREEN IN THE WINDSHIELD ALL DAY TO HELP CUT THE DIRECT SUN FROM CRACKING THE DASH. i USE RAGG TOPP ON MY TOP (2005) AND IT STILL LOOKS GREAT. SO FAR NO FADING, KNOCK WOOD!!

IT DOES COOL OFF THE MINUTE i PUT THE TOP DOWN. ALTHOUGH I DO ADMIT BEFORE THE PRICE OF GAS WENT UP, I USED TO DRIVE WITH THE A/C ON IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER!!

Well what I do is I have had a full toneau made for my PT ragtop and so I just cover the leather interior with it when the top is down. I paid 1,200 to have the toneau made at an uphostery shop and am real pleased with it.

Send me your e-mail and I will send you a bunch of photos of it.

That's a cool idea! That way the top and the interior are both protected from sun! Or rain for that matter!

If I'm going to leave our cruiser out in the sun for long periods of time.I put the convertible top cover on. .It's like a car cover only for the top.
