There is an addendum to the show rules that I was asked to share. This will probably not impact too many of you.

Due to space limitations and the fact that there is no class for them there will be No Trailers allowed at this event. If you bring one you will be asked to unhitch it and put it elsewhere.

Perhaps if there is enough intrest and we can find room to accommodate them we could have a separate "Trailer Class" at our 2nd annual Car Show.

Not to nit pick but you can't have a 1st Annual anything. You can have a first or an annual but not a 1st annual. You can of course have a 2nd Annual however.

Actually sounds like a fun event I hope it goes well.

Hi CranTerri,
Lancaster is in the north eastern part of Los Angeles County, out in the High Desert (Mojave Desert). We are an hour away from Los Angeles. Lancaster is next to the city of Palmdale. Thank you PT-Blu for linking the directions search for CranTerri. Hope you can join us for the CAR SHOW.

Re: [calicruiser] Phun Time Cruisers 1st Annual Car Show 02/11/2006 Can't Post

It would be a slightly long drive from Castrol Valley (used to live in Dublin, so I know!).... I'll be making the trek (or so I'm planning) from Long Beach - about an hour and a half away....

Now, my question about the event:

How will the 'classes' be devised...? I've been to some shows where their are 'points' for each upgrade you've done to your car, and some of the point classes are so close and some are SO broad, that you have nearly stock vehicles competing against some fairly modified vehicles....

For example, with my PT, I've got a theme - Bears - and have had some graphics created for my car. I've also done a 'custom' stripe job, all by my own hand. However, because of these personalizations, I end up competing against cars that are custom painted with airbrushed murals or custom paint jobs and flames and so on... obviously, my more subdued look (which I prefer) doesn't fair well against the more heavily worked on vehicles....

So, using the classes listed on the event registration form, I can see that I'd probably compete in 'best stock' but can also compete in 'best pin striping'. And does 'best tailgate theme' - does this include the 'stuff' and props we use to push our theme, such as the collection of bears I bring?

Here's another suggestion - maybe for then 2nd Annual event - maybe have a class for 'professional' and 'amatuer' mods.... some of us prefer to make the car even more personal and do it ourselves, where others have the work done by professional shops and can spend THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars on upgrades....

Re: [calicruiser] Phun Time Cruisers 1st Annual Car Show 02/11/2006 Can't Post

Hi Craig,
Here is the response from our Car Show Organizers to your previous post:

Thank you for your suggestion, that is something to think about. The judges are assigned to one class each and that is the only class they judge. For instance: Flames Class, the judges will only judge flames and they will look at every car that has flames on it no matter how they are done and score each car on a 1-5. After they are done looking at each car then they will total each car for flames only and put them in the order of first, second and third. The same for each class. Each class is judged on it's own merits for each car. It has nothing to do with the dollar amount each owner spends on their car. Your car will be judged in every class that it fits into. You don't pick the classes the judges do. Just to let you know our car is very mild too and we don't place but its about the fun for us of seeing and being with everyone for the day. Hope this answers your question about the judging. Thank you for your interest. Sincerely, Bob and Kathy Paris bpfirepa@msn.com

Re: [calicruiser] Phun Time Cruisers 1st Annual Car Show 02/11/2006 Can't Post

Thanks, Wanda... and to Bob and Kathy, too....

I'm not concerned so much about the costs involved in customizing my Cruiser... I just prefer to have a hand in it, which makes it seem (at least to ME) to be more mine.... and I'm surely NOT knocking all of the fabulous Cruisers out there with a ton of 'pro' work on them.

And, it's good to know the way the judging will take place. Again, I was quite disheartened at a show this past year, when relatively mild Cruisers were competing with vehicles that were far more modified, based upon a point structure given to each modification that was made on a vehicle. And these 'points' were not used in the judging, but in the decision of which class your car belonged in. So a car with simple pin striping and maybe some minor trim was competing with a car with flames and stripes and wheels and so on....

Having judges look at each car on it's merits within a class is great. As I don't have any aftermarket chrome on my car, it's good to know I won't be competing against those WITH aftermarket chrome.... (or flames or wood kits or custom airbrush, etc., etc., etc.)

Again, thanks for the information and the follow through.... can't wait for February...

Hi again Craig,
Bob and Kathy send this back to you:

We know exactly what you are talking about. Our car is very mild because we like it that way and really can't afford to invest a lot of money. We like our car the way it is but like others to see what we have done. We have been judged in classes with flames and lots of upgrades that we don't have nor want. We felt this would be a different way of judging and might make it so others with less on their car can, maybe, experience winning and not always be the same ones that win at every single show. Let all of us have the experience. Hopefully. Bob and Kathy

Hey Craig,

I'm Sorry to say that you will not be able to receive a dash plaque or a goodie bag because the deadline for that was Dec. 23rd. You can still register for the Car Show, however, and participate in that. I'm not sure about the t-shirt purchases. I will try to get in touch with the Car Show organizers regarding t-shirt orders and let you know.

Hi Craig,

I don't think you fully understand the judging process for the shows. In the one you mentioned with the points system, only the individual classes i.e. stock, personalized, modified, etc. were divided using the points for modifications. That's the fairest way to divide PT Cruisers into classes for judging. Those who have made a lot of modifications should be judged in a different class than those, like you who have not done much. If your Cruiser has as few modifications as you claim, you should have been in one of the lower classes and not competing against Cruisers like mine or those who have done much more. The classes were judged by outside judges who didn't know any of the owners. Using points to divide the classes and using outside judges is the best way that I can think of for such a show.

It sounds like you were going for Best Theme. If you're talking about the show in San Diego, the Best Theme had nothing to do with the points or the judges. That award was voted on by the participants. Those who entered the show received ballots, as you should have, to vote on Best Theme, Best Flames, etc. Yes, for Best Theme you were competing against all the Cruisers. including mine, at the show that had a theme.

At the show you're going to the judges are going to judge your Cruiser against all the others that have a theme regardless of how much they have spent or how many modifications they have made, just like the participants did in San Diego. For that class or any other at this show, the more someone has done, in good taste according to the judges, will most likely win. I don't see how it could be any different. The show organizers have chosen not to make any divisions based on how much has been done to someone's ride.

For the San Diego show and this one the organizers have chosen to tell you ahead of time what the "classes" are and who is doing the judging. If you enter the show, you should be willing to accept the results.

The best thing to do at a show is to go, meet new people, enjoy all the other rides, get new ideas and have fun. Those who go just to win, don't get as much out of a show even if they do win and the odds are that they won't win.

Good luck and enjoy the show.

----------

Enjoy the Cruise

Re: [Basset Hound] Phun Time Cruisers 1st Annual Car Show 02/11/2006 Can't Post

Basset,

I agree with you on a lot of respects... Especially about going to meet people and make friends...

And, yes, I was mostly referring to SD 2005. I don't have a lot of mods on my car... again, a relatively simple stripe job, some other very minor graphics and such... But, basing it solely on points is wrong, in my opinion.... here's why:

With the SD 2005 point structure, the "point level" between some of the classes were not evenly disbursed.... I don't remember the exact point break down (and don't have last year's forms!), but it was not properly skewed....

If the "stock" class goes to 20 points, then the "mild" or "stock/modified" should go to 40... then the "custom" should be 60 and the wild would be 80 and so on.... but the SD points didn't go that way... it was (maybe) 10 and then 40 and then 70 and then 100 and.... So, while I was just a bit out of the realm for, say, level II, and just a bit over the total, the next level was too high and I was competing with cars that should have been level IV, not level 3....

For the SD show, my mods were very simple - a 3 band tape stripe around the body line, an aftermarket cone filter intake, a 'pewter' toned HVAC control panel and some PT logo door locks... Oh, and the Mopar rear bumper cover.... But, the points were so skewed, that I was competing in the 3rd level of points.... but I should have been in level 2... so, I was competing against cars that were a lot more modified than mine, but theire modifications had a lower point level - say a lot of 2 and 3 points, and mine had some 5s and a few 2s.... but I was out of my league, based upon the points...

Another way to do a point structure, if you're doing points, would be to assign a point level that is the SAME for each mod. Make everything 2 points... or have categories that have the same point levels... all murals, pinstripes, exterior graphics, etc., are 2 points. Minor mechanical mods are 2 points. Major mechanical mods are 3 or 5 or ? points.... so that if you've set up custom airbags and hydraulics to make your PT dance to the music, that should have a higher point total than somebody that did the 'mild' airbrushed pinstripes....

It is my opinion that the points were skewed. Nobody will be able to change that opinion..... While I agree that points are probably one of the 'fairest' ways of judging a car, there are 2 things - the point 'levels' need to be evenly distributed AND it should be up to an impartial person to assign the points... If an person was to not mark off something on their form, while it may be noticed (or may not be!) during judging, they could be competing (unfairly!) in a lower class than that to which they belong...

Best in show is a far different animal.... best in show needs to be just that.... the best for the ENTIRE show, regardless of 'point class' or such.

It is also my opinion that there is a BIG difference between a 'pro' PT and an 'amatuer' PT - and they should be judged differently, too.... Some of us don't have 5 or 10 or 25 thousand dollars to pay for custom ghost flames, air bag suspensions, custom interiors, wheels, audio/video, etc., or we don't like certain of those and should not have to compete with those that do and can afford those upgrades.

Will that stop me from attending and showing in PT events? No. I'm not some little cry baby that runs away because I feel slighted. But, I feel that the contests DO tend to neglect the 'little' guy and praise the big bucks and the flashy.... Some of us like understated and simple.... others like over the top and flashy.... I will still attend and still compete, but it doesn't mean I have to 'swallow' my pride and agree with the judges. I have my opinions, they have their opinions, you have yours.... maybe those opinions will match, maybe they wont....

That's another thing about judges.... maybe I'm a judge that HATES flames. So, is it fair for ME to judge flames? Not really. I don't like them, I don't appreciate them and wouldn't care about the subtleties between some really well done ghost flames vs. the factory vinyl flames vs. your flames vs. the custom hand-done-4-days-in-the-shop pro flames.... If I like wild and fancy and flashy PTs, it's not really fair to judge the plainer or stock or mild PTs, as they will not do anything for me....

Now, to turn this a bit more 'personal'.... Your PT (and I've seen him/her up close at events) is on the mild side, comparitively... yes, you've got big yellow flames and yellow smoothies and custom bumpers and running boards.... Another red and yellow flamed PT - best in show from Laughlin 2005 - is far more modified than yours. But how would you feel if your car was pitted against his? It's an unfair match-up, as his car is far more modified than yours.... He's got a LOT of custom work (paint, body parts, interior, etc., etc., etc.) and should only compete against cars that have a lot of custom work and not compete with your Hound-mobile or even some of the other milder PTs on the roads.

Again, my opinion and my thoughts...

BTW, here's a link to PT Bear*Num in his current state. After the SD Show, my car was broadsided as I towed him behind my motorhome. So, what 'was' the entry to the SD show is 'no more' and has become this.... http://www.doubledptcc.com/dd_craig_dunham.htm... The top left picture is from before the SD show - with just my stripes. Everything after came after PT Bear*num returned from a month in the body shop.

Thanks for your reply and consideration of what I've said. See ya at PT River Run 2006 and SD 2006!

Re: [calicruiser] Phun Time Cruisers 1st Annual Car Show 02/11/2006 Can't Post

WaveCraig,

Thanks for your reply. I never said that the SD points schedule was perfect. It's just the best way to run a show, in my opinion. The biggest problem with it in SD was the fact that there were quite a few who didn't count up all their points. I'm not saying they were dishonest, but there were many PT Cruisers at that show that were in the wrong class. That fact may one reason the points schedule seemed a little skewed.

I appreciate you comments on my ride. Yes, it's a lot milder that many and that's the way I want it. Everything on my ride was designed or done by me, except for my flames. John Esposito sprayed them after I told him what I wanted. He designed flames that could have been on a hot rod in the late '50s which is exactly what I wanted. BTW-Several people have copied. them and others have used them as a guide for their painters. There is no way that I can spend the big $ that some do.

I'm glad to hear that you are still attending shows. If there is space for our cruiser at the Lancaster sho we may go. If not I'll see you at another one. I'd love to have a chat and that's so hard to do here. Best of luck and enjoy the ride.Cool

Hi Wanda,

Is there room at the show for my ride? Pam and I didn't register because we thought we might have puppies. Since the breeding didn't take, were free on the 11th.Dance

Hi Don
Yes there should still be room. Just show up, pay your entry fee ($15.00 at the gate) and your in.

See you there.

WaveHey Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I've got some work to do on the Cruiser (mostly washing, waxing and detailing). If I can get it all done in time we'll be there. Pam and I are looking forward to seeing everyone. We haven't done a PT event since the Granada Hills parade. I hope to see you there.

Don:
Let me know if you and Pam end up going. We can cruise out together. Cool

Mike:
What time can we arrive? All the info says the show starts at 11:00 but there is nothing about arrival time.

Gerry.
