Regular Maintenance Can't Post

What does everyone here do to their PT Cruisers that they consider regular maintenance? The following is what I do to my 2005 Touring Edition. The factory plug wires were changed immediately as recommended.

1. Change oil & filter every 3,000 miles.
2. Rotate tires every oil change.
3. Change air & fuel filter every other oil change (6,000).
4. Change wiper blades every 12,000 miles.
5. Hand wax car every 90 days.
6. Change all fluids every 12,000 miles (trans, coolant, etc.)
7. Front end alignment every 12,000 miles.
8. Complete fuel service at 25,000 miles.
9. Complete vehicle safety inspection once a year.
10. Hand wash car ONLY. Never go to a car wash.

My cruiser currently has 42K miles on it. At 50K, I plan to have new plug wires installed, a complete trans service & a complete fuel system service again.

Hey Bo Wave
I just went over 64k on my car and took it in to the dealer for the 65k mile check up. $700 later, she runs like a top again. I had everything done that the dealer recommended in my book. Wires, plugs, fluids replaced, new brakes (was badly needed) AC had gone out and was fixed under warrenty Cool. Tires rotated and balanced, oil change, the list was endless! But I feel safe and she runs like a top.

By the Way, I am working on your dash blankie, should have it in the mail next week. Teddi

Teddi, how are you Darlin'? Long time no see, lol. I'm looking forward to the dash blankie. I got your trim sitting here waiting for you. Yeah, I just had the brakes done on my PT also. I forgot to mention that. I got 38K out of those set of brakes so, that's not bad. So, you go to the dealer huh? I'm not a dealer person myself. I have always taken my vehicle to Firestone because their work is warranty accepted & they do a much better job than the dealer & they actually want your business where as the dealer couldn't care either way. I want someone working on my car who really cares, not someone who is working on it because it's their job. Know what I mean? Anyway, it's good to hear from you & I'm glad your PT is safe & up to date.

looking forward to the dash blankie! Wave

You have a good point Bo. I just never know who to trust with my car, lol. Being a female and not too knowledgeable about what needs done and what doesn't need done I HOPE that the dealer won't rip me off like someone I don't know would. Plus, I got a big book of coupons when I bought the car for maint. stuff. Guess if I knew more about cars, besides how cute I look in the convertible ROFL, then I would try other places. Teddi

WaveHey Bo Congrats on your Cruiser Article.I learned very early in the game to bring my car only to my mechanic and never the stealer. And the one time I did because my mechanic couldn't service the key transmitters the stealer tried to steal 250 dollars for 2 transmitters when all I needed was for him to reprogram them. Thanks PTCC Mike for the copy of the TSB that I used to shove down the stealer's throat and I got them fixed for free when I threatened to raise my voice, show everyone what they were trying to do,and see how fast I could clear thier service departmentROFL.It looks like your list is a duplicate of mine.If your treat your Cruiser right it will return the favor.God Bless...........Mike

Re: [Cruiser RN] Regular Maintenance Can't Post

Mike, thanks for the Congrats my friend. I was shocked when Mickey gave me the news! Dance

Yes Sir, I know what you mean about going to the Stealer. I have not gone to a dealer since the mid 80's for any repairs on my vehicles unless it's mandatory warranty repairs because of faulty equipment. Even then, I do my best to watch them like a hawk & I never let them rip me off. I am real good at raising my voice & getting attention as well & we all know how much they hate that.

I agree with you Mike, keep up regular maintenance & today's cars will last forever. Wave

I recently sold my 1968 Ford F-250 Camper Special that had the original 141K miles on it & it still looked & ran like new. That's 40 years old folks & regular maintenance is what kept it that way!

Talk about over kill. #2,3,5,6,7.9, #5 if you show it it's more often every couple of weeks or less..#6 Are you kidding? #7 only if you drive off road. #8 what's that. I use Chevron or STP fuel injector cleaners ever couple of tank fulls.#9 I do before every trip or cruise event. #2 I haven't rotated a set of tires in my entire life. I can't see buying four tires when they wear out when I only have to buy 2 at a time.

Re: [silvereagle] Regular Maintenance Can't Post

I don't show my car so, waxing every 90 days keeps the vehicle looking good to me. I wash it once a week & it's garage kept so, I'm happy with waxing 4 times a year. If I did show my car, I'm sure I would wax it a lot more often. Number #8 is a complete fuel service recommended by Chrysler. It has something to do with re-setting to factory specs, cleaning out the lines & replacing all necessary filters n' such to include proper pressure in the system. They recommend it so, I have it done. The first thing I do when I purchase a new vehicle is have the front end aligned. Vehicles are not properly aligned at the factory & no two vehicles will handle the same from the assembly line. I learned this many years ago. The proper alignmnent really saves on tire replacement. I usually get 50K to 60K miles out of a set of tires by having it aligned every 12K miles.

Safety vehicle inspection is required once a year, thus the reason for that. I always do a trip inspection if I am traveling somewhere, that's just a habit from many years of trucking. As for number #6, I have my trans fluid & coolant changed every 12K miles like clockwork. I don't see any of this as overkill. I'm good to the car & the car returns the favor. Simple.

Re: [Bo Blue PT] Regular Maintenance Can't Post

We have four vhicles,Two Pt's ,a Dodge truck, and a Buick Century. The truck is an 04, the Buick is an 01, The other pT is an 06 Convertible. The Buick gets waxed once a year ,The truck maybe twice a year and the PT's when ever I feel like it.With the fact that we all have Clear coat on our Paint I really don't know if we need it. I took the chrome wheels off both PT's and the truck and they now have painted Clear coat on them. It's easier then using all that chrome polish. I Just soap them down and hose them off. It could be that since I've been collecting SS for a couple of year now that I'm just to lazy to bend over and polish all the time.My legs aren't as good as they used to be. I tried to get a couple of young girls to do it but my wife is against it. Anyway, enjoy your ride, (I know it's not a truck) but you'll still will have fun driving it.

-I change the oil every 10K and ONLY use AMSOIL 0W30, change the Oil filter every 5K and ONLY with a WIX filter, top off with AMSOIL 0W30.
-Rotate the tires front to back once a year and check brakes. I also now check Axle Nuts for proper torque since losing a wheelbearing possibility due to loose axle nut.
-Clean the drop-in K&N filter once a year. My PT does not have a fuel filter so I can't change it (unless you call the screen on the fuel pump in the gas tank a filter).
-Change the Wipers once a year as the winter really kills them quickly.
-Change 1/2 of trans fluid every year and change the filter at 30K intervals.
-Coolant is factory good for 5 years.
-I don't worry about an alignment unless something feels wrong or the tires are starting to wear funny. Never really had a problem with premature tire wear.
-Check tire pressure once a month
-Check engine oil every fillup and topoff windshield fluid as needed
-One can of ZMax every 30K in gas tank
-Vermont State Safety inspection required once a year ($30)
-Hand wash when I can, but usually have it washed by machine several times a year due to the temperature, wash engine once a year.

-Changed out the OEM Plugs and Wires when Vehicle was new (didn't want to have to go through what I went through with my first PT)

Re: [P B Cruiser] Regular Maintenance Can't Post

The PT Cruiser does indeed have a fuel filter. The fuel filter is located in the fuel tank. The fuel service is a combination of cleaners, additives and pressure check of the fuel system itself. After a few comments on it, I went back down to my Firestone dealer & had him show me this fuel service recommended by DC. He brought it up on the computer, it not only showed the required fuel system service, it showed the location of the fuel filter & pump. They recommend a fuel filter change when & if the pump requires replacing. That's all I can tell you about that, lol.
