Replacement Keys Can't Post

Wanted a Cruiser ever since they came out. Now the proud owner of a 2001 Limited, 21000 miles, mint condition, that is loaded. Problem..... The person I bought if from only had one key. He also only had one remote. I have called several dealers around and priced keys. They all seem to charge about the same amount for cutting them, but the price varies alot to program them. Someone said I could program them myself. Is that possible? What about the remote entry? Can that be done also. I might add, that I only have one dealer where I live who is also the highest and the dumbest, wants $60 just to program the key. The next closest is about 1.5 hour drive. By the way, in the owners manual was a small plastic bag. Is this the bag the keys were in and is that the code I need??? Thanks.....

Re: [Cruiser Dave] Replacement Keys Can't Post

I think it costs around $100 to have an extra key made, and I thought only the dealer could do it (I could be wrong). I bought my car used a year ago, and the guy who turned in his lease only returned one set of keys. I made a big stink about it, and the dealership finally agreed to make me an extra set. I made the point that it wasn't my fault the guy didn't turn in his keys, and that should have been part of his lease agreement.

Good luck! Smile

You can reprogram a key ONLY if you already have two keys programmed. So if you only have one, go to the dealer. Mike's tech tips show you how at http://www.ptcruiserclub.org/...s/how_program_pt.htm

Welcome aboard, CruiserDave. Hope to see you here in the SE part of the country! Wave

Re: [Cruiser Dave] Replacement Keys Can't Post

Customer programming requires two valid keys, then you can program additional ones.

If you only have one key, a dealer has to program the additional ones you want. The dealer needs to HAVE the 4 digit PIN code and ALL keys you will want programmed.

To program a new key, all the dealer technician does is hook up the DRBIII computer and press a few buttons. Should not take more than 10 minutes for each key. They will need the accessory key code from the selling dealer's invoice, Dial Function 13, or call Chrysler to get the PIN number (only a dealer technician can do this, customers can NOT, Chrysler will not give the key PIN numbers to anybody who is not a dealer tech.). If the wrong key code is attempted to be programmed three times in a row, the SKIM module will swith to lock-out mode. During lock-out mode the car will not start, even with a valid key. To get out of lock out mode you have to leave the key on for 90 minutes, it is adviseable to use a battry charger during the 90 minutes to prevent battery drain.

Recently I lost a key fob for my Pontiac Grand Prix GT, I got a new fob from the Pontiac dealer for $30 and the service manager programmed it for free. He had to go under the glove box and find a fuse to set the program mode. Hows that for service!

SENTRY KEY-IF EQUIPPED
(Sentry keys have a fat gray rubber head on them, and they cost approx. $30-35 at a Chrysler Dealer, then they need to be cut to fit the ignition and programmed to match the car electronicially)
Your vehicle is equipped with the Sentry Key System. With this system, an electronically coded ignition key sends a signal to the vehicle electronics. If the electronics recognizes the signal, the vehicle will start and run. If the system does not recognize the signal the vehicle will start and run for about 2 seconds then shut off.

NOTE: The Sentry Key System is not compatible with remote starting systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and a loss of security protection.
Large metallic objects or devices such as the Mobil Speed Pass may also cause vehicle starting problems. These devices cannot damage the Sentry Key system, but can cause a momentary problem if they are too close to the sentry key when attempting to start the engine. If a problem occurs, turn the ignition off and move all objects on the key ring away from the Sentry Key. Restart the engine.

The Theft Alarm Light will illuminate for about 3 seconds when the ignition switch is first turned to the ON position. If the vehicle electronics do not recognize the signal from the ignition key, the theft alarm light will flash continuously to signal that the vehicle has been immobilized. If the Theft Alarm Light remains ON during vehicle operation, it indicates a fault in the system electronics.

All of the keys provided with your new vehicle have been programmed to the vehicle electronics.
Replacement Keys

NOTE: Only keys that have been programmed to the vehicle electronics can be used to start the vehicle.

At the time of purchase, the original owner is provided with a four digit PIN number. This number is required for dealer replacement of keys. Duplication of keys may be performed at an authorized dealer or by using the Customer Key Programming procedure. This procedure consists of programming a non programmed key to the vehicle electronics. The new key must first be cut to fit the vehicle locks.

NOTE: When having the Sentry Key System serviced, bring all vehicle keys to the dealer.

Customer Key Programming

You can program new keys to the system if you have two valid keys by doing the following:
1. Cut the additional sentry key transponder blank(s) to match the ignition lock cylinder key code.
2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition and turn the ignition switch ON for at least 3 seconds but no longer than 15 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the first key.
4. Insert the second valid key and turn the ignition switch ON within 15 seconds After ten seconds a chime will sound and the Theft Alarm Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the second key.
5. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition and turn the ignition switch ON within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds a single chime will sound. The Theft Alarm Light will stop flashing, turn on for 3 seconds; then turn off.

The new Sentry Key has been programmed. Repeat this process to program up to a total of 8 keys.

Re: [Cruiser Dave] Replacement Keys Can't Post

Thanks folks. that's what I was afraid of. With the redneck dealer in this area, I'm really afraid they will screw it up. I'll opt for a dealer in a bigger city. In fact, the dealer here said I had to have the vehicle there while he was programming it. Makes me think he didn't know what he was talking about....right?

Anyway, thanks again.....will head to Knoxville and get it done there (and pay the price).

Yes the vehicle is what they program the keys to. A dealer can plug in a computer under your steering column and program keys.

Re: [Cruiser Dave] Replacement Keys Can't Post

I went to a dealer in NJ (not selling) it cost me $38.64 incl. tax to get a key made. He did not use a computer on the car nor did he need my 2nd key. He got the numbers he needed from the Chrysler web site. works great.

You can't program a sentry key to your car without:

a) two valid already programmed keys AND a third key already cut to fit lock that is to be programmed next

or

b) the key code from Chrysler customer service or from the selling dealers invoice AND the DRBIII Dealer scan tool (computer) AND a new key already cut to fit lock that is to be programmed

Re: [PTCCmike] Replacement Keys Can't Post

I lost a transponder key for my 2005 PT/GT Convertible and got a replacement blank on ebay. Since I only have one working key, I have to have the dealer cut and program the replacement key. I have installed the Stage 1 computer upgrade on my TURBO PT. Is there any chance the dealer can mess up/ruin the Stage 1 while programing the replacement key? Thanks for your help. eddieloft/ Ed Loftus

Re: [Cruiser Dave] Replacement Keys Can't Post

I recently had a replacement made for my '05 and was charged $28.99; however, I still had a second key being used for a remote start. This key was made at a local hardware store. I was told that if I only had a single key, they would have charged $60.00 for the key.

Re: [eddieloft] Replacement Keys Can't Post

Can anyone tell me if the dealer can mess up/ deflash the Stage 1 on my Turbo by accident when programming a new/ replacement transponder key? I hear that the dealer has to plug into the computer port under the dash to program a transponder key if you only have one key. Thanks, eddieloft

Re: [delrosen] Replacement Keys Can't Post

I had a replacement key made just today...cost was over $125 for the key, key cutting, and programming (only had one key left; the one I replaced had broken off in the ignition...don't ask!) This was WITHOUT the remote open/lock, which would have added about $100 onto the cost. I just kept the remote part of the broken key on the chainwith the new new one. NOW, can anyone tell me, if I use just the key to open one door, WHY does the alarm sound when I get in and try to start it..?? I have to hit the "open" button on the key to stop it!
