The 2001 Mopar Nationals (August 10-12, at the National Trail Raceway-Columbus, Ohio) were, as usual, great fun. (Chrome and fins and HORSEPOWER--we even saw, if you can believe it, a supercharged hemi!) In addition to the eyestrain from trying to see so many beautiful classic cars at once, this year included a fair number of PT Cruisers for us to ogle!In addition to the usual suspects (all the standard colors were seen), since this is a National event it attracted several "special" Cruisers. An appearance was made by the "Beach Cruiser" -- a blue Woody with a yellow surfboard on top. His picture was taken by Mopar Muscle Magazine photographer--we can't tell if it will get published, but it's impressive that they took the picture, considering how many tricked-out muscle cars and gorgeous survivors were around. We also saw an interesting black PT from New Jersey that had a very rich-looking gold color painted all along the bottom half.
A big part of the Mopar Nationals is the cruising. Along Brice Road (a main street in Reynoldsburg), for several hours Friday and Saturday nights they let all the cool cars cruise around the street. This event attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of onlookers (as you can see by the pictures we brought back). And they graciously accepted our "new and future classics" into the group--we cruised right along with the muscle cars and "real" classics! Sadly, we missed the Friday night cruise but heard that Dan & Tammy from Columbus were cruising Brice Road in their souped-up black PT--it sure sounded good in their garage; we were sorry to miss it on the open street. But we trust that the onlookers got an eye- and ear-ful! While cruising on Saturday night we did see another black PT; did not get a chance to speak with its owner, but the license plate was MRBEANE and it was so shiny that it glowed even in dark of night! He must have waxed all month long!
We traded a few friendly words with a fun guy who was driving a precursor to our favorite PTs--he had a big, shiny 1935 Plymouth which clearly showed signs of being in the PT Cruiser's family tree. And he liked OUR PT! ...Quite a compliment, from someone with an "original." We sure liked his running boards and hinged hood.
Boy, we could go on and on... but suffice it to say that if you only go to two car shows a year, the Mopar Nationals in Columbus OH and the All Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle PA are the two to do!
