Doug's funeral was yesterday and was just how he wanted it to be. We even had a motorcycle procession go by at the beginning if the service (Sharon couldn't have planned that, it just happened for another funeral). Ed (PT FUBAR) made the following tribute:

Ah, the Patriot Guard Riders. Appropriate, even if not planned. I think he would have gotten a kick out of that. You will be missed, AU, and as for me, a KitKat bar will taste just a little different, should I ever be tempted to pick one up now. ----------

His grown children, Many and Chris, had AU flags—the kind like you put on your car window during football season. They asked the Cruisers to put one on their car in memory of Doug. All the PTs (lead by Darryl) caravanned together, and we had our AU flags flying. We got to line the Cruisers up near the gravesite. I had never been to a military funeral before, and it tore me up. His son-in-law (also named Chris) is Air Force and presented Sharon with the flag. Someone on the hill played Taps. An officer drove in from Birmingham for visitation to present Sharon with a medal for Doug's 35 years of civilian service. ----------

I didn't know this chap, but have to say I admire the respect and honour with which you're marking his passing. If being PT enthusiasts has this positive an effect on people, then I'm proud to be about to join in. Best regards, Tom ----------

Jerry and I were so saddened to hear this news. Doug will be sorely missed. It sounds like the service was beautiful and a true tribute to an incredible man. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends - our thoughts and prayers are with them. PTCC will be a bit less bright without him and his terrific sense of humor - but I imagine he would remind us all that most of us would never have had the opportunity to "meet" one another without the PT connection. Therefore, I am once again reminded why I am very glad to hang my hat here with all of you. After all, we are family, too, and this thread shows how much we care and share. Rest in peace, Doug. Thank you so much for continuing to remember and post in regards to my dad. It means so much to my family to see and read comments from all those that cared about him. We sure do miss him. Mandy Mitchell (AU CRZR's daughter) I'm not sure if this post is making it to everyone on the forum. If not, could you please make sure the word gets out of our appreciation.

Hi Mandy, Just wanted to let you know how much Kathy and I miss your Dad. Some of the fondest memories we have was meeting him in Aug. and receiving the Honorary Southerner award from him. It's hanging in a special place above my desk. You and your families are in our hearts. Gary ---------- If it's gonna happen - it's gonna happen out there.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5PUHUZWyFeg As sad as we are, we also have hope. This youtube video is from a memorial service here in Montgomery. This man lost his 2 year old son last weekend. His name is Rick Burgess. Ya'll may know him as Rick from the "Rick and Bubba" show on the radio. As much as I can not imagine losing my child, it still hits home with how I feel about losing my dad. It is long, but well worth the viewing. It expresses what my dad believed and what we believe as a family. The sound was quiet on my computer, but easily listened to through earphones. ---------- AUCRZR on Horsepower TV Show http://webpages.charter.net/tigertown/hptv.3g2
