Rim size question Can't Post

I have 16inch rims now, if I were to go up to 18inch rims would it screw up my speedometer?

Re: [nhptwoody] Rim size question Can't Post

the rim size won't make a difference, it's the overall diameter of the tire that matters... so by going from a 16" rim to an 18" rim you would have to go down in aspect ratio on the tire size to keep everything as close to the same diameter as possible...
as an example a 16" rim with a 50 series tire would be the same overall diameter as an 18" rim with a 40 series tire...

if you go on TireRack.com and look at the rim/tire options for the PT they will give you everything you need to know...

Re: [rcktpwrd] Rim size question Can't Post

I will say that I went up to 18's and the 225/40/18 tires (recommended to keep overall diameter the same) and I do still have a problem with the speedometer being off which I actually had checked to make sure after I got a ticket one time. It is not much of a difference but it goes up with speed. Up to about 35 it reads right but 1 or 2 off at 45, 2 or 3 off at 55, etc. I keep this in account when I am driving but I guess it is good for my odometer to read slow.

If the tires are the same overall diameter as the stock stuff, then the speedo was probably off from the beginning... which not uncommon...

Instead of using the 225/40/18. You should try the 245/35/18. In the long run this is closer to the original aspect ratio so it will not give any problems. Midnite Cruiser

Re: [unctrheels86] Rim size question Can't Post

Got a ticket from the State Police about 2 yrs ago ( waived the points (good record) $140 and 1yr prob for 15 over. Found out later my speedometer was off by about 7 mph. Talked to the State Police about it -said it was to late but would've helped at the time. Also they don't even care about us till we hit 10 over, he's got more important things to do, but watch out for the small town cops. The laws don't even require a speedometer in the car, they just expect you to obey the law, however you do it. So it's not a true arguement for speeding.

Re: [nhptwoody] Rim size question Can't Post

I just went through changing from 15 in to 16 in and i was concerned about this as well. I found a site on the net that really helped out a lot. Go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. You put in the size of your factory tires and wheels and then you put in the new sizes and it will tell you the difference of the spedometer. Very useful in this type of situation.

Rim size is irrelevant .......its to Diameter of the tire that one should consider.
Tire diameter affects your speedo......not rim size.

Re: [gatoreye] Rim size question Can't Post

This is for future reference if I ever get extra money or find a millionaire to marry me. Does anyone put bigger tires in the back? Does that look tacky to do that? Is it possible even? I have normal 15 inch tires. My son wants huge tires on it but he did that to his Samari and it rides so rough. He says to get big fat tires as well. I sort of like the idea of a bigger tire in the back so it looks even more like a roadster. advise? MICKEY

I have 235/40/18's on my 06 convertible. When I'm doing 60 I'm actually doing 61.3... or 17 turns less per mile.
