Shane: Help in deciphering tire size numbers Can't Post

Can you explain what the different numbers mean on tire sizes. I know the last number is the wheel diameter. I suspect the first number before the slash is the width, (in mm?) What does the number after the slash mean? Is that the sidewall height? Is it a fixed value in mm or is it a percentage of some other parameter? Does a larger number after the slash mean a taller tire?

I want to put on the widest and tallest 16" rear tire that will fit on 16 x 7, 40 mm offset rims. I don't know if you can answer that specifically since you don't know what rims but at least if I can understand what the numbers mean I can make an educated choice.

I'm considering 245/45-16 vs. 245/50-16. Is 255 too wide for a 7" rim?

Thanks,

Todd

I believe the number after the slash is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the width.

The other numbers are correct.

As to the rest - Shane?

Todd,
The number are in (mm) millimeter, except for the rim size which is in inches (diameter).
so, a 245/45-16 = 245mm (wide at road contact) and the side wall is 45mm (high, varies on the manufacturer of the tire because some have the rim protectors) and is fitted on a 16in rim. 255 is definitely too wide for a 7" rim. i would suggest 7.5 or 8"
but for PT 255 is too wide any way.
right shane?

I'm considering 245/45-16 vs. 245/50-16. Is 255 too wide for a 7" rim?

Thanks,

Todd

What does 245/45-16 mean?

245 is the section width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters.

45 is % of 245mm, which represents the height of one sidewall

16 is the rim diameter in inches.

A tire size is actually a formula to tell you the overall diameter of the tire.

What I do is convert the MM into inches and go from there. To convert into inches you divide the first # by 25.4. You then multiply by 45% to find the height of one sidewall. You then multiply by 2 because there is a sidewall above the rim and one sidewall below the rim. You then add the 16 which is the rim diameter in inches.

So it should look like this.

245mm/25.4 is 9.65"
9.65" X 45% is 4.34"
4.34" X 2 is 8.68"
8.68" + 16" is 24.68"

So your overall diameter of the tire is 24.68"
